Chapter 7 - The Dark Ascent

The emergency brake engaged with a metallic screech that echoed sharply inside the confined space of the elevator cab. The amber overhead light flickered twice before dying completely, leaving Amy and Eleanor suspended in total blackness between the second and third floors. Amy’s breath hitched, a wave of claustrophobia washing over her as she pressed her back against the wood-paneled wall, her hands flying instinctively to protect her stomach.
"Eleanor?" Amy called out, her voice trembling in the dark. "What’s happening? Is this part of your plan?"
"Keep your voice down," Eleanor hissed from somewhere near the control panel. The sound of rustling silk and heavy breathing filled the dark space. "Someone has cut the auxiliary power from the main security terminal downstairs. This wasn't a mechanical failure."
Amy’s mind raced back to the alleyway behind her apartment, to the man in the tactical jacket, to Arthur Pendelton left behind in the rain. Julian hadn't just sent clean-up crew to her apartment; he had anticipated every move his mother might make. He knew Eleanor’s ambition, and he had clearly anticipated her attempt to leverage the family secrets before the morning board meeting.
"He knew," Amy whispered into the void, the cold realization settling deep into her bones. "Julian knew you were coming for the master files. He’s locked us in."
"He thinks he has us trapped," Eleanor replied, her voice steady, though Amy could hear the faint strain of panic beneath the older woman's cool exterior. "Julian was always arrogant, but he lacks the stomach for a true family war. He thinks locking a door solves a problem."
A sudden, sharp metallic click echoed from above the elevator ceiling, followed by the heavy thud of boots landing on the escape hatch. A sliver of blinding white light cut through the center of the dark cab as the overhead hatch was slowly pried open from the outside. Amy froze, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She reached into her gold clutch, her fingers closing around the cold metal zipper, searching for anything she could use to defend herself.
A face appeared in the rectangular opening above them, illuminated from behind by a harsh flashlight beam. It wasn't Julian. It was a younger man with dark, slicked-back hair and a security badge swinging from his belt—Marcus, Julian’s head of private detail.
"Evening, Mrs. Sterling," Marcus said down into the dark, his voice chillingly polite. "And good evening to you too, Amy. Mr. Sterling sends his regards. He thought it would be best if you stayed right here until the board meeting concluded tomorrow afternoon."
Eleanor stepped forward into the dim shaft of light, her chin held high with aristocratic defiance, despite the undignified situation. "You insolent boy. Do you have any idea who you are talking to? Move aside this instant, or you won't live to see your next paycheck."
Marcus didn't blink. He reached down with a heavy steel bracket and slid it across the exterior tracks, locking the elevator doors permanently shut from the outside.

"Orders from the top, Mrs. Sterling," Marcus replied smoothly. "The company is moving forward with or without you."
