Chapter 8 - The Hidden Panel

The heavy clunk of the exterior safety latch locking into place sounded like a death knell in the cramped elevator shaft. Above them, the beam of Marcus’s flashlight swept the interior once more before the overhead hatch slammed shut, plunging Amy and Eleanor back into absolute darkness. The silence that followed was heavy and suffocating, broken only by the faint, rhythmic ticking of Eleanor’s vintage gold wristwatch.

"The arrogant little fool," Eleanor muttered, her voice trembling with a mixture of fury and calculated frustration. She slammed her fist against the wood-paneled wall of the cab, the sharp sound echoing in the small space. "He thinks a dead-bolt and a locked shaft can stop a Sterling. My husband built this house with three separate escape routes for every room, designed specifically to bypass the modern security systems."

Amy pressed her back against the corner, her breathing slow and measured, trying to conserve oxygen and keep her panic under control. "Eleanor, we are suspended twelve feet in the air between two floors in a dead elevator with no cell signal. Ranting about your husband’s paranoia isn't going to get us out of here."

"Not by the front door, no," Eleanor replied sharply. She reached out in the dark, her fingers tracing the intricate wood-carving along the lower baseboard of the elevator panel. "Help me down here. Feel for the brass seam near the floor seam. There’s an emergency manual override release that hasn't been used since the corporate lockout of ninety-eight."

Kneeling on the dusty floor of the elevator in her flowing mauve dress, Amy ignored the ache in her back and ran her fingers along the cold wood. Her nails caught on a small, recessed metal plate hidden beneath a layer of felt lining. She pushed upward with all her strength, and with a soft pneumatic hiss, a spring-loaded panel popped open, revealing a narrow vertical crawlspace leading directly into the hollow wall cavity of the mansion.

"There," Amy whispered, a cold draft of fresh air rushing out from the cavity, carrying the faint scent of old dust and ozone from the mansion's massive electrical infrastructure.

"In," Eleanor commanded, not wasting a single second. The older woman hoisted her heavy silk skirt and squeezed her frame into the dark opening with surprising agility for someone of her years.

Amy followed immediately, pulling the manila envelope tightly against her chest as she wriggled through the narrow opening into the dark wall cavity. The space was barely wide enough for her shoulders, forcing her to turn sideways and inch forward along a series of heavy copper pipes that hummed with the electrical current of the house. Behind them, the muffled sound of a heavy drill biting into the outer elevator doors echoed through the drywall—Marcus and his team were wasting no time trying to force their way into the car.

They crawled in silence for what felt like hours, navigating the dark architectural arteries of the mansion until Eleanor’s hand suddenly stopped against a dead-end wall covered by an ornate, filigreed brass heating vent.

"We're behind the third-floor study," Eleanor whispered back over her shoulder. "Julian’s private domain. Watch your step as we drop down; the desk is directly beneath the floorboard latch."
