Chapter 6 - The Iron Gates of Greed

The heavy iron gates swung shut behind the sedan with a final, echoing clang that sounded like a prison door locking from the outside. Amy gripped the door handle instinctively, but it remained firmly locked from the master console up front. Eleanor didn't look at her; she was staring straight ahead through the windshield at Julian’s black town car parked beneath the grand portico of the Sterling family estate.

"You said this place was safe," Amy said, her voice sharp with rising panic as she turned to face the older woman. "Julian’s car is right there. You brought me straight into his line of fire."

Eleanor finally turned her head, her expression unreadable in the dim dashboard light. "Safety is an illusion, Amy. You only survive in this world by controlling the board before your opponent even realizes the game has started. Julian thinks he’s the master strategist of this family, but he forgot who taught him how to play."

The driver killed the engine, and the heavy silence of the upstate estate pressed in from all sides. Through the rain-streaked windows, the monolithic stone mansion loomed like a fortress of gray granite, its tall Gothic windows dark except for a single amber light burning in the third-floor study. That was Julian’s domain—the room where he kept his private ledgers, his encrypted servers, and the true records of the company’s offshore accounts.

"Listen to me very carefully," Eleanor said, her voice dropping to a low, commanding register as she placed a cold, diamond-ringed hand over Amy’s trembling fingers. "Julian is inside right now celebrating the preliminary merger papers with Chloe’s father over the phone. He thinks he has won everything. But he left his executive desk safe unlocked. Inside is the original master copy of the corporate restructuring plan—the one that proves he embezzled from the pension fund to finance his engagement ring."

Amy stared down at Eleanor’s hand, then up into her calculating eyes. "Why are you giving me this? If Julian goes down for embezzlement, the entire Sterling holding company goes down with him. You’ll lose everything you've spent your entire life protecting."

"I am protecting my legacy, not Julian’s ego," Eleanor replied coldly, pulling her hand back. "A dynasty built on a rotting foundation will eventually crush everyone inside it. I would rather see the building burn to the ground than let an incompetent fool hand the keys to strangers."

The passenger locks clicked open simultaneously. Eleanor pushed her door open, stepping out into the cold drizzle without waiting for a response. Amy hesitated for a fraction of a second, her instincts screaming that she was walking into a trap, but the memory of the forged paternity waiver steeled her spine. She pushed the door open, grabbed her gold clutch and the manila envelope, and followed the older woman toward the towering double doors of the mansion.

As they stepped inside the grand marble foyer, the massive grandfather clock chimed twice, its deep, resonant tone vibrating through the floorboards. The house was dead silent, save for the faint sound of classical music drifting down from the upper gallery. Eleanor led Amy swiftly toward a hidden side corridor behind the sweeping staircase—a private service elevator that bypassed the main security cameras entirely.

They stepped into the small wood-paneled cab, and Eleanor pressed the button for the third floor. As the cable groaned and began its slow, vertical ascent, the elevator suddenly jerked violently and ground to a complete halt between floors, plunging them into absolute darkness.
