Chapter 8

The principal's office smelled faintly of old leather and expensive furniture polish, but the atmosphere inside was as cold as a winter storm. Clara sat erect in the leather guest chair, her fingers resting lightly on the polished wooden armrests while Leo sat quietly on a small sofa in the corner, coloring in a sketchbook with steady, deliberate strokes. Superintendent Hayes and Principal Arthur stood across the heavy oak desk, looking less like educational leaders and more like defendants waiting for a guilty verdict.

"Mrs. Vance, please," Hayes began, clearing his throat nervously as he pushed a thick manila folder across the desk toward her. "We recognize that certain... protocols were applied too rigorously in this instance. We are prepared to offer a full internal review, and Miss Gable has already been reassigned to administrative duties pending further evaluation."

Clara didn't touch the folder. She didn't even look down at it. Her gaze remained fixed on Hayes with a piercing, analytical clarity that made him squirm under his collar.

"Reassignment isn't a consequence, Hayes; it's a paid vacation," Clara said, her voice calm, controlled, and utterly chilling. "Let's talk about what was actually in that room down the hall. The room with the redacted floor plans and the archived psychological profiles of children whose parents questioned your disciplinary methods."

Arthur stiffened, his hands gripping the edge of the desk so hard his knuckles turned white. "That archive is restricted district property. How do you—"

"I built your entire network architecture, Arthur," Clara interrupted smoothly, tilting her head slightly. "Did you honestly believe that installing a commercial-grade firewall would stop me from accessing local storage nodes on a system I designed, installed, and maintained?"

"That's a violation of privacy regulations," Hayes stammered, trying to regain some legal high ground.

"Privacy regulations?" Clara let out a short, cold laugh that lacked any humor. "You locked a five-year-old child in an unventilated room, threatened him with physical intimidation using a plastic ruler, and systematically documented dissent among families who didn't conform to your administrative quotas. You forfeited any claim to privacy the moment you turned a school into a detention camp."

She reached into her handbag and placed a sleek, black flash drive squarely in the center of the manila folder.

"Everything you tried to scrub from the local servers over the last twenty-four hours is mirrored on that drive," Clara continued, standing up slowly to tower over the two men. "Along with financial transfer records linking your discretionary fund to private security firms that have no business operating inside an elementary school."

Hayes stared at the small piece of plastic as if it were a live grenade. "What do you want, Mrs. Vance? Name your terms."

"I don't negotiate with wardens," Clara said, turning toward the corner to collect Leo and his sketchbook. "I dismantle them."
