Chapter 4

Miss Gable stood frozen in the amber-lit gloom of the classroom, her grip on the yellow plastic ruler loosening as a sudden, inexplicable chill swept through the room. The air felt heavy, charged with static electricity that made the tiny hairs on her arms stand upright. She lowered the ruler slowly, her eyes darting away from Leo and toward the corner of the ceiling where the dark dome of the security camera hummed quietly. The red status light on the camera housing was no longer blinking its usual steady pulse; it was glowing with a fierce, unwavering crimson light that pierced the shadows like a tiny pair of angry eyes.
"What is that?" Miss Gable muttered under her breath, taking an involuntary step backward away from the wall.
Leo stopped crying, wiping his damp cheeks with the sleeve of his blue polo shirt. He looked up at the ceiling, sensing the sudden shift in the room's atmosphere, and a small, knowing calm replaced his fear. He didn't understand the technology, but he knew his mother's voice had just echoed in his mind, fierce and protective.
Outside in the hallway, the sound of hurried footsteps grew louder as another staff member rushed toward room 101, slipping through the half-open door with wide, panicked eyes.
"Miss Gable, did you see the main server?" the other teacher gasped, holding a tablet that was flashing violent error messages across the screen. "Every camera in the building just rebooted. They're all streaming to an external IP address we can't block."
"Who is on the other end?" Miss Gable demanded, her voice losing its previous authoritative edge as she glanced nervously at Leo, who was now standing up straight with his arms folded just like hers.
"I don't know," the second teacher replied, holding up the tablet so the glowing amber light illuminated their tense faces. "The firewall isn't just bypassed; it's being rewritten in real-time. Whoever is watching us has complete control of the facility's master grid."
Miss Gable turned back to Leo, her expression hardening with desperate realization. "You planned this. Your mother knew about the evaluation protocols before we even initiated them."
"My mom knows everything," Leo said quietly, his voice steady and devoid of its earlier childish terror. "She built the walls you're hiding behind."
Before Miss Gable could respond, the classroom intercom crackled to life with a loud, piercing burst of feedback that made both teachers cover their ears. Instead of the usual morning announcements or static, the speaker emitted a low, rhythmic hum that sounded remarkably like a heavy, controlled human heartbeat. The amber lights on the walls pulsed in time with the sound, turning the educational environment into something resembling a high-security containment facility.

The second teacher dropped her tablet onto the floor, the glass cracking against the hard linoleum as she stared in sheer disbelief at the security camera above the door, which had now tilted downward on its motorized gimbal to stare directly at them.
"We need to get the children out of the building," the second teacher whispered, her voice shaking uncontrollably. "If Clara has the master keys, she's already on her way here."
