Chapter 2

Down the quiet hallway, separated from Leo by two heavy fire doors and a flight of linoleum stairs, Noah stood on a squeaking green plastic chair in the corner of the empty activity room. His striped shirt caught the dim light filtering through the high transom window as he stretched his small fingers upward, desperately trying to reach the hem of a heavy black cloth that had been hastily draped over a tall bulletin board. The fabric smelled of damp wool and long-forgotten art projects, masking whatever secret the school administration had tried so desperately to conceal from the parents.

Noah pulled down hard, his sneakers slipping against the slick seat of the chair before he managed to yank the fabric free. It pooled around his ankles in a cloud of grey dust, revealing a massive, intricate schematic map pinned directly to the corkboard. The map detailed every underground cable, ventilation duct, and hidden security blind spot in the entire elementary school. Red marker lines crisscrossed the floor plans, connecting the principal's office directly to the basement archive where the old student psychological profiles were stored under lock and key.

"Noah, what are you doing in here?" a sharp voice echoed from the doorway.

Noah spun around, his heart pounding against his ribs like a trapped bird. Another teacher stood in the threshold, her eyes wide with sudden panic as she stared at the exposed schematic map.

"Why is this map here?" Noah asked, his voice trembling but surprisingly firm as he pointed a small finger at a redacted section labeled Project Horizon. "What are you hiding about our classroom?"

The teacher stepped forward quickly, her hand reaching out to grab his arm before he could touch the pins. "You shouldn't be looking at that. That is private school property. Step down from that chair right now."

"You're not allowed to lock the doors during recess," Noah protested, pulling his arm back just out of her reach. "My mom told me to look for the emergency exits if the alarms ever went off."

"Your mother doesn't know anything about how this school operates," the teacher hissed, her face draining of color as she glanced up at the ceiling vent, suddenly realizing the proximity of the digital surveillance array. "Get down, or you're going to cause serious trouble for your family."

Noah hesitated, his eyes darting toward the open hallway where he could hear the faint sound of Miss Gable's voice echoing from the primary wing. He knew something was terribly wrong with the way the teachers whispered in the hallways when the parents dropped their children off in the morning. They acted less like educators and more like wardens guarding a facility.

As the teacher lunged forward to grab the heavy black cloth and throw it back over the board, Noah slipped past her legs with a quick duck, bolting out the door and into the shadows of the corridor. He didn't know where to run, but he knew he had to reach the main office phone before they cut the internal lines.

Behind him, the teacher picked up her desk phone with trembling fingers and dialed a quick internal extension.

"We have a security breach in the west wing," she whispered frantically into the receiver. "The kids are seeing the floor plans. You need to handle this right now before Clara finds out."
