Chapter 13

The narrow, fluorescent-lit tunnel stretched ahead of them like an industrial artery, its corrugated metal walls humming with the faint residual energy of high-voltage cables running parallel to the floor. Clara pushed the heavy steel door fully open, keeping one hand securely on Leo's shoulder while using her other hand to steady the stumbling principal, who looked ready to collapse from sheer exhaustion and terror.

"Keep moving," Clara instructed, her voice cutting through the hum of the tunnel with absolute authority. "If we stop here, we give them time to seal the bulkheads from the other end."

"Where does this lead?" Arthur gasped, clutching his side as they jogged down the incline. "I thought this was just a storage annex."

"It's an evacuation corridor built during the Cold War," Clara replied without slowing down, her hazel eyes scanning the security cameras mounted along the ceiling, which were currently offline and dripping with condensation. "It connects directly to the municipal sub-basement beneath the superintendent's office. Hayes didn't just know about the behavioral program; he was routing the data streams directly to his private terminal."

Leo walked alongside them with steady, unhurried steps, his small sneakers hitting the metal grating of the floor in a rhythmic cadence. He didn't look back once, trusting his mother completely as the air around them grew warmer and smelled faintly of city exhaust and damp concrete.

After nearly ten minutes of steady movement, the metal walls gave way to smooth, reinforced concrete, and the tunnel opened up into a spacious underground parking garage filled with government vehicles and private sedans. In the far corner of the garage, a familiar black SUV idled quietly, its automated security detail standing at attention beside the open rear door.

Clara guided Leo toward the vehicle, opening the door and lifting him safely into the plush leather interior before turning back to face Principal Arthur, who collapsed against a concrete pillar, gasping for breath.

"You're not coming with us, Arthur," Clara said coldly, checking her smartphone as encrypted notifications began flooding her screen from her corporate defense network.

"What... what are you going to do with me?" Arthur asked, looking up with wide, desperate eyes. "The board will destroy me if I go back, and the police won't believe—"

"The police won't need to believe anything," Clara interrupted, holding up her phone so the glowing screen illuminated his pale face. "Every byte of data from that sub-level server has been successfully intercepted and mirrored to the federal oversight committee's secure cloud storage. Your career as an educator is over, Arthur. Now, you get to explain to a federal judge why your district was running experimental psychological operations on five-year-old children."

Before Arthur could answer, Clara climbed into the back of the SUV, pulling the heavy door shut behind her with a satisfying, solid thud.
