Chapter 1

Leo stood with his small hands flat against the rough plaster of the classroom wall, his shoulders trembling slightly as he tried to muffle his heavy breathing. The heavy wool of the American flag hanging in the corner brushed against his arm, smelling faintly of old dust and floor wax. Across the room, Miss Gable stood with her arms crossed tightly over her dark blazer, her posture rigid and unforgiving. She tapped a bright yellow plastic ruler against her thigh, the sharp plastic sound echoing off the bare linoleum floors like a ticking clock counting down his failure.
"Stand still," Miss Gable said, her voice dropping into a harsh, controlled register that brooked no argument. "You can’t even follow one simple instruction. Crying isn’t going to save you."
Leo sniffled, turning his tear-streaked face toward her with a look of desperate, quiet plea. "I didn't mean to drop the box, Miss Gable. The blocks just slipped out of my hands."
"Excuses are just noise, Leo," Miss Gable replied, stepping closer, the yellow ruler now pointing directly at his chest. "Your mother thinks you are so special, that the rules of this school do not apply to you. Well, they do. And you will stand there until you learn how to control yourself."
"My mom is going to be so mad at you," Leo whispered, his voice cracking under the weight of his fear.
"Your mother is miles away in a glass tower, staring at spreadsheets while you waste my time," Miss Gable snapped, her eyes narrowing as she gripped the ruler tighter. "She doesn't see you right now. No one sees you. So you will stay right there and think about your disobedience."
What Miss Gable did not know, and what the silent security camera mounted high in the corner of the ceiling failed to record, was that miles away, Clara was watching every single micro-expression on a high-definition monitor. Clara’s fingers hovered over her desk, her breath catching in her throat as the digital feed flickered with a strange, unnatural static. She zoomed in on the yellow ruler trembling in the teacher's hand, her pulse pounding in her ears. Clara knew the school administration thought they could isolate her son and break his spirit just like they had broken others before him. But Clara had built the surveillance grid protecting this entire district, and she had just unlocked a hidden visual override code that bypassed every firewall the principal had installed.

"They think they can hide behind closed doors," Clara whispered to the empty boardroom.
Suddenly, the screen on her laptop flashed an emergency alert from room 104, showing another child walking straight toward a banned doorway.
