Chapter 5: The Hidden Document

The dinner service proceeded in a blur of silver cutlery, crystal glassware, and murmured conversations about offshore accounts and corporate mergers. Alyssa sat near the foot of the massive mahogany table, well away from Julianna, who held court at the head. Every time Alyssa looked up, she caught the cold, watchful gaze of her sister cutting through the candlelight like a razor blade.
Senator Vance, seated to Julianna’s right, droned on about tax deregulation and the upcoming federal appointments. To most guests, it sounded like dry political maneuvering. To Alyssa, who had spent a decade auditing Vance’s financial filings before her abduction, every sentence was a thinly veiled confession of embezzlement.
Midway through the main course of roasted venison, Alyssa excused herself from the table, claiming a sudden wave of dizziness. Julianna’s eyes narrowed instantly, but with three foreign investors watching intently, she could not make a scene. She merely nodded with a tight, terrifying smile and gave a subtle flick of her wrist toward the hallway.
Instead of heading to the powder room, Alyssa slipped quietly down the darkened service corridor that ran parallel to the dining hall. Her destination was Julianna’s private study—a high-security room protected by a biometric fingerprint scanner and a reinforced steel door. For months, Alyssa had observed the cleaning staff entering the room using a master electronic key card kept in a small lockbox behind the pantry wall.
Her heart hammered against her ribs as she reached the pantry, her fingers working quickly to slide open the wooden panel. The small metal box was right where she expected it to be. Using a bobby pin she had smuggled from her bedroom, she picked the simple brass lock with practiced efficiency—a skill she had learned from an old college friend who loved lock-sporting. The lid popped open with a faint metallic click. Inside lay the black plastic master key card.
Clutching the card, Alyssa hurried down the dim corridor until she stood before Julianna’s study door. She pressed the card against the magnetic reader. A soft green light blinked once, and the heavy door unlatched with a pneumatic hiss.

She slipped inside into the cool, dark room, pulling the door shut behind her. Moonlight filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating a massive mahogany desk, towering bookshelves, and a state-of-the-art wall safe behind a framed oil painting. Alyssa approached the safe, her mind racing. She knew Julianna kept the original fraudulent asset-transfer deeds—the documents proving her forced signature and illegal imprisonment—hidden inside this room.
Using the ambient moonlight, she pressed her fingers against the keypad of the wall safe, recalling the numeric sequence she had overheard Julianna punch in three weeks prior: the anniversary of their father’s suspicious death. The digital lock beeped softly three times, followed by a heavy mechanical clunk as the steel door swung open.
