Chapter 4: Whispers in the Grand Hall

By eight o’clock, the grand dining hall on the ground floor was ablaze with the light of a hundred candles flickering in crystal chandeliers. Laughter and the melodic clinking of champagne flutes echoed off the mahogany walls and vaulted ceilings. Wealthy investors, corrupt politicians, and high-society socialites mingled near the marble fireplace, discussing stock portfolios, real estate acquisitions, and global politics as if the world outside weren’t burning.

Alyssa descended the sweeping grand staircase with calculated grace. Every muscle in her body screamed in protest against the high heels, but she forced her posture to remain immaculate. Julianna stood near the head of the long dining table, draped in her sparkling silver gown, laughing lightly at a remark made by Senator Marcus Vance, a longtime family ally deeply implicated in the corporate fraud that had destroyed Alyssa’s life’s work.

As Alyssa reached the bottom of the landing, Julianna’s eyes snapped toward her. For a split second, a flash of warning crossed Julianna’s flawless features, quickly masked by a welcoming, sisterly smile.

“Ah, Brianna, darling! You’re finally feeling better,” Julianna announced loudly enough to draw the attention of the surrounding guests. “Everyone, you remember my dear sister Brianna. She’s been resting extensively to recover from her lingering health issues.”

Heads turned. Polite, sympathetic smiles were directed at Alyssa. Senator Vance stepped forward, holding a crystal glass of amber scotch, his eyes scanning Alyssa with a mixture of professional interest and thinly veiled condescension.

“Good to see you back among the living, young lady,” Senator Vance rumbled, his voice thick with unearned confidence. “We missed your sharp legal mind during the board restructuring last year. Though, health must always come first.”

Alyssa forced her lips into a tight, polite smile, keeping her hands clasped loosely in front of her velvet gown to hide the residual tremors. “Thank you, Senator. The recovery has been long, but I am beginning to remember... quite a lot of things I had temporarily misplaced.”

Julianna’s smile tightened by a fraction of a millimeter. She glided across the Persian rug, smoothly interposing herself between Alyssa and the Senator, her arm linking through Alyssa’s with a grip like a steel vice concealed beneath a silk glove.

“And I am ensuring she takes it very slowly, Senator,” Julianna purred, her fingernails pressing sharply into the soft flesh of Alyssa’s inner arm. “Family is precious, and I won’t risk her health again. Come, darling, let’s get you seated before dinner is served.”

As they walked toward the far end of the long dining table, Alyssa felt the adrenaline surging through her veins. She was surrounded by enemies, trapped in a house of lies, but for the first time in three years, she was standing in the same room as the men who had stolen her legacy—and she had no intention of staying quiet much longer.
