Chapter 1: The Broken Kitchen Floor

The heavy oak doors of the bright, sterile kitchen swung open with agonizing slowness. Sunlight poured across the polished white tiles, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the sterile air. Alyssa sat huddled against the base of the island counter, her knees pulled tightly to her chest. She wore a stained beige t-shirt and grey sweatpants that hung loosely on her frame. Dark circles shadowed her hollow eyes, and purple bruises mottled her forearms and cheekbone. In her trembling hands, she clutched a heavy ceramic bowl filled with lukewarm vegetable soup. A silver spoon rested idly against the rim, vibrating slightly from the tremor in her fingers.
Standing in the grand double doorway was Julianna, a striking thirty-five-year-old woman with fiery red hair swept into an immaculate updo. Julianna wore a breathtaking sparkling silver evening gown that caught the morning light, complemented by a brilliant diamond necklace and matching drop earrings. Her expression was entirely devoid of warmth, a mask of aristocratic coldness.
Julianna stepped across the threshold, her designer heels clicking sharply against the immaculate floor. She stared down at Alyssa with a detached, clinical curiosity, as if observing a broken toy discarded in a hallway.
“Brianna…” Julianna murmured, her voice smooth, controlled, and chillingly soft.
Alyssa froze instantly. The ceramic bowl tilted, a single drop of broth spilling over the edge onto her grey sweatpants. Her breath hitched in her throat. She looked up slowly, her eyes wide and bloodshot, filled with an ancient, paralyzing terror. She held the bowl closer to her chest, as if the thin earthenware could somehow shield her from the impending storm.
Julianna stepped closer, her shadow falling completely over Alyssa’s huddled form. The red-haired woman looked down with a piercing, intense glare, her gaze sweeping over the fresh bruises on Alyssa's arms. Alyssa pulled herself even tighter into a ball, shivering uncontrollably as she tried to make herself invisible against the cold kitchen cabinets.
Julianna’s eyes widened with a sudden, menacing flicker of recognition. She slowly raised a manicured hand, her fingers curling slightly into a fist.

“Alyssa?” Julianna whispered, the name dropping like a lead weight into the silent kitchen.
The air grew suffocatingly heavy. Alyssa could hear the frantic beating of her own heart in her ears. She knew this moment had been inevitable for months, yet the reality of it paralyzed her limbs. Julianna did not strike her; instead, she lowered her hand and offered a terrifyingly serene smile that failed to reach her eyes. The game had shifted, and Alyssa was already losing.
