Chapter 3: The Weight of the Silver Gown

The heavy oak doors clicked shut as Julianna left the kitchen, the sharp echo leaving Alyssa alone once more in the blinding morning light. For several minutes, Alyssa remained frozen against the cabinets, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. The threat of the basement—a windowless concrete vault where she had spent the entire previous winter—sent a fresh wave of panic through her exhausted body. Slowly, carefully, she set the bowl of lukewarm soup down on the floor, her bruised arms trembling so violently she could barely unclench her fingers.

Pushing herself up from the floor required every ounce of strength she possessed. Her legs felt like hollow glass, ready to shatter beneath her weight. She dragged herself down the long, mirrored hallway toward the east wing, avoiding the security cameras mounted in the ornate cornices. Every step reminded her of the physical toll of her captivity: the ribs cracked during a failed escape attempt six months ago, the fading purple bruises on her wrists from iron restraints, and the chronic ache in her lower back.

Entering her designated bedroom, she found a heavy garment bag draped over the mahogany four-poster bed. Unzipping it revealed a stunning emerald-green velvet evening gown, exquisitely tailored to her exact pre-captivity measurements. Next to the dress sat a pair of silver heels and a velvet jewelry box containing vintage emerald earrings. Julianna left nothing to chance; even in torment, her prisoners were expected to look like pristine ornaments when paraded before high-society guests.

Alyssa walked into the adjoining bathroom and turned on the shower, wincing as the scalding water hit her bruised skin. She scrubbed away the kitchen grime, washing her tangled hair with the expensive rose-scented shampoo provided in the marble shower. As the water ran pink down the drain, she stared at her reflection in the steam-fogged mirror. Using the edge of her palm, she wiped the glass clear. The dark circles under her eyes were stark, and the purplish-yellow bruise on her cheekbone stood out like a jagged signature of abuse.

She was thin—dangerously thin—with collarbones jutting sharply beneath her pale skin. Yet, looking into her own eyes, she saw something that hadn't been there an hour ago: defiance. Hearing her real name had not broken her; it had awakened the dormant attorney who used to dismantle corporate empires before Julianna staged her disappearance.

Dressing in the heavy velvet gown, Alyssa felt the fabric wrap around her like a second skin. It was warm, opulent, and utterly suffocating. She fastened the emerald earrings, clipped her hair into a neat, elegant chignon, and practiced a neutral, blank expression in the mirror. Tonight’s dinner party was not just a performance; it was her only opportunity to find a flaw in Julianna’s impenetrable fortress.
