Chapter 10: The Turning Point on the Highway

The heavy semi-truck screeched to a halt on the deserted highway shoulder, hazard lights flashing amber against the dark, rainy night sky. The driver, a weathered middle-aged man in a flannel shirt, leaned out of the cab window, staring down in disbelief at the bedraggled woman standing in the downpour. Alyssa wore a mud-stained emerald velvet gown, her hair disheveled, bruises stark against her pale skin, clutching a ruined manila folder to her chest.

“Lady, what on earth happened to you?” the driver called out, his voice laced with concern and shock. “Do you need an ambulance?”

“I need a phone,” Alyssa gasped, her voice raw, rain mixing with tears on her face. “Please, I need to call the FBI or the state police immediately. My life is in danger.”

The driver hesitated for a single second, sizing up her desperate appearance, before pushing open the passenger door and lowering the metal step. “Get in. Quick. We’re sitting ducks out here on the curve.”

Alyssa scrambled up into the warm, dry cab of the truck, slamming the heavy door shut. She collapsed onto the passenger seat, shivering violently from the cold rain and adrenaline crash. The driver handed her a stained flannel work jacket, which she wrapped tightly around her trembling shoulders.

“Use my mobile,” the driver said, sliding his phone across the dashboard console. “Dial 911 or whoever you need. But tell me we’re not running from the cops.”

“No,” Alyssa said, unlocking the phone with trembling fingers. “We’re running from the people who own the cops.”

She didn't call 911. Local law enforcement in the county was deeply compromised by Julianna’s campaign contributions and Senator Vance’s political influence. Instead, she dialed a direct encrypted extension for Special Agent David Vance—no relation to the corrupt Senator—an honest federal prosecutor she had worked with five years prior on a high-profile corporate corruption task force.

The phone rang three times before a gruff, tired voice answered. “Vance here. Make it quick.”

“David, it’s Alyssa,” she said, her voice breaking slightly.

Silence stretched across the line for two agonizing seconds. “Alyssa? My God, Alyssa Vance? The family reported you died in a private clinic fire in Switzerland two years ago. Where are you?”

“I was never in Switzerland. I was locked in the basement of my family’s estate by my sister Julianna,” Alyssa rushed out, the words tumbling over each other. “She forged my signature, stole my corporate assets, and murdered our father. I have the original transfer deeds and medical fraud documents in my hands right now. She’s coming after me, David. You need to send federal marshals to the estate immediately.”

Special Agent Vance’s tone shifted instantly from skepticism to razor-sharp professional focus. “Where are you right now, Alyssa? Give me your exact location. I’m dispatching a federal tactical unit to your coordinates and mobilizing a raid warrant for the Demarest estate.”
