Chapter 9

Across town in a sleek, overpriced high-rise apartment in the Upper East Side, Elena paced frantically across her hardwood floors, her designer heels clicking a staccato rhythm of pure panic. The teal slip dress she had worn with such confidence at the grand hotel lobby now lay crumpled in a heap by the bedroom door. Her phone buzzed relentlessly against the glass coffee table, displaying a continuous stream of rejection notifications from every credit card issuer, bank, and boutique she patronized.

She tapped frantically on her mobile banking app once more, praying that the asset freeze was just a temporary glitch, a computer error that would resolve itself. Instead, the screen remained stubbornly blank, accompanied by a cold legal notice informing her that all linked accounts had been placed under federal administrative hold pending an investigation into corporate malfeasance and illicit asset transfer.

"Damn him," Elena muttered aloud, her voice cracking with fury as she hurled her phone across the room. It bounced harmlessly against a plush velvet sofa and slid across the floor.

The intercom buzzer chimed suddenly, startling her. She rushed to the wall panel, pressing the talk button with a trembling finger. "Who is it?" she demanded.

"Federal marshals, Ms. Vance," a flat, official voice crackled through the speaker. "We have a court-ordered warrant for the seizure of unregistered assets and personal property derived from corporate embezzlement funds. Open the door, please."

Elena felt the floor drop out from beneath her. There was no Julian to shield her, no corporate executive to sign a check, no smooth deflection that could talk her way out of federal jurisdiction. She pressed the electronic release button with a shaking hand, her chest tightening as the heavy oak door of her apartment clicked open.

Two marshals in dark suits stepped into the entryway, their expressions entirely neutral, devoid of emotion or sympathy. Behind them stood a court-appointed forensic accountant holding a metal clipboard.

"Ms. Elena Vance?" the senior marshal asked, stepping into the living room and presenting the official paperwork. "We are here to secure the white leather clutch mentioned in the preliminary filing, along with all luxury items, cash reserves, and high-value accessories purchased with funds transferred from Vanguard Global Holdings accounts between January and the present date."

Elena stared at the papers, her throat tight and dry. "This is a mistake," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Julian said the funds were legitimate... he told me his consulting firm was expanding..."

"Your consulting partner is currently signing his own confession in Westchester," the marshal replied without missing a beat. "Please step away from the vanity, ma'am. We are commencing the inventory."
