Chapter 10

Back in Westchester, the afternoon sun filtered through the tall oak trees surrounding Clara’s property, casting dappled light across the manicured lawn. Clara sat on the back patio with Toby, helping him build a towering structure out of colorful wooden blocks. With every block they stacked, Toby giggled with delight, his earlier concerns about his father’s absence entirely forgotten in the warmth of uninterrupted maternal attention.

The legal notifications from Marcus Vance’s office arrived quietly via email, confirming that Julian had completed the formal asset transfer and that Elena’s apartment had been successfully inventoried by federal authorities. There was no sense of triumph or malicious satisfaction in Clara’s chest; only a profound, grounded sense of relief. The illusion was gone, replaced by reality, structure, and absolute security.

Her phone chimed gently beside her mug of tea. It was an email from the Vanguard board of directors, formally requesting her presence at the Manhattan headquarters the following Monday to assume the active role of Chief Executive Officer.

Clara looked at the screen for a long moment, considering the immense responsibility it entailed. Running a multi-billion-dollar global holding company while raising a young son as a single mother would require every ounce of her resilience, discipline, and strategic acumen. But she knew she was more than capable. She had designed the very systems that kept the corporation stable; she could lead it forward with integrity.

She picked up the phone, drafted a concise acceptance message, and pressed send.

"Mommy, look! Big tower!" Toby shouted proudly, placing a final red block on top of their wooden structure.

Clara smiled, setting her phone aside and reaching out to steady the wobbling tower with her hand. "That's a magnificent tower, sweet boy," she said, her voice warm and steady. "And you know what the best part is?"

"What?" Toby asked, his wide brown eyes looking up at her.

"We built it ourselves, from the ground up, and it's built to last."
