Chapter 15

The autumn air in Westchester carried the crisp, invigorating scent of falling leaves as the first rays of dawn broke over the horizon, painting the eastern sky in brilliant strokes of gold and rose. Inside the house, the quiet peace of early morning was broken only by the soft, rhythmic patter of little feet running down the carpeted hallway toward the master bedroom.
"Mommy! Wake up! It's morning!" Toby’s excited voice echoed through the doorway as he scrambled up onto the mattress, crawling over the duvet with a bright, infectious grin.
Clara opened her eyes, immediately breaking into a warm, genuine smile as she opened her arms to catch her son, pulling him close against her chest in a tight, affectionate embrace. "Good morning, my sweet boy," she murmured, kissing his forehead as he snuggled comfortably against her shoulder. "Did you dream of building towers?"
"I dreamed of building a rocket ship that goes all the way to the stars," Toby declared earnestly, gesturing grandly with his small hands.
"Well, then we'll just have to build a rocket ship today," Clara replied, her voice filled with quiet joy and absolute certainty.

She looked past Toby toward the bedside table, where her silver-embroidered handbag rested quietly beside a framed photograph of the two of them laughing in the garden. The vintage cordless telephone was safely tucked away inside, its heavy antenna retracted, its secure line dormant because there were no more emergencies to neutralize, no more illusions to shatter, and no more storms left to weather.
The illusion of marble and mirrors was gone forever, replaced by a foundation of solid rock, genuine love, and unwavering integrity. Clara held her son tightly, knowing that whatever horizons lay ahead, they were standing on solid ground, ready for every new adventure the world had to offer.
