Chapter 2

The metallic click of the vintage antenna extending upward sounded disproportionately loud in the quiet lobby. Clara’s thumb deftly punched a precise sequence of ten numbers into the rotary-style push buttons, a security code memorized years ago during her tenure as senior risk analyst before she stepped back to raise Toby. Julian frowned, finally registering the unusual object in her hand, though his eyes still held a lingering condescension. He assumed she was merely putting on a theatrical display, a desperate housewife clutching at props to reclaim her dignity in a five-star hotel.
Elena smoothed the skirt of her teal slip dress, leaning against a marble pillar with a look of mild amusement. "Really, Julian, are you going to let your nanny make a scene?" she asked, her tone dripping with toxic insulation.
Clara ignored them both. She brought the heavy handset to her ear, listening to the instantaneous, secure hum of a private military-grade satellite relay routing her call past every corporate firewall in Manhattan. Her gaze locked onto Julian’s eyes, holding them with an intense, cold expression that finally caused the color to drain slightly from his cheeks. There was no hesitation in her posture, no tremor in her voice.
"Block every asset and terminate his position immediately," Clara instructed the voice on the other end with absolute, chilling authority.
For a fraction of a second, Julian let out a short, dry chuckle, attempting to salvage his crumbling bravado. He took a half-step forward, his hand raised in a dismissive gesture. "Clara, stop this childish game. You are embarrassing yourself and the boy. Go back to the suburban house and let me handle my business."

Elena’s laughter was cut short, however, by the strange, synchronized buzzing of the mobile devices inside both of their designer pockets. Julian’s grey suit jacket began to vibrate persistently, followed instantly by the sharp, alarming chime of a high-priority financial alert. Elena pulled her phone from her white clutch with trembling fingers, her eyes widening as she stared at the screen where her mobile banking app displayed a stark, unyielding red banner across every single account balance.
Julian pulled his own sleek device into view, his thumb swiping frantically to unlock the corporate portal. The screen flashed a uniform, terrifying notification: Account Frozen. Below it, a system-wide notice from Vanguard Human Resources declared his employee credentials revoked, his security clearance wiped, and his executive suite locked down effective immediately.
