Chapter 7

Morning sunlight streamed through the kitchen windows, casting warm golden patterns across the wooden table where Clara sat reviewing the final digital manifest sent over by Marcus Vance. The corporate restructuring was already complete. The Vanguard board had unanimously ratified her interim chairmanship, and the internal audit had successfully quarantined every compromised subsidiary before public markets opened for trading.
Upstairs, the sound of drawers opening and closing signaled that Julian was packing his remaining belongings into two sensible suitcases. There was no shouting, no dramatic slamming of doors, only the quiet, inevitable sounds of a life being systematically dismantled and packed away.
Toby padded into the kitchen a few minutes later, wearing his yellow wool sweater from the previous day, rubbing his eyes with both fists. "Mommy?" he murmured sleepily, padding across the floor to lean against her knee.
Clara immediately softened, laying her tablet aside and lifting her son up into her lap, wrapping her arms around him with a tenderness that contrasted sharply with the iron resolve she had shown the night before. "Good morning, sweet boy," she whispered, kissing the top of his head. "How did you sleep?"
"Good," Toby said, resting his chin on her shoulder. "Is Daddy going away?"
"Daddy has to go away for work, sweetheart," Clara answered honestly, choosing her words with care so as not to burden the child with complexities he couldn't yet understand. "He won't be living here anymore, but you and I are going to be just fine. We have a lot of new adventures ahead of us."
Julian appeared in the kitchen doorway a moment later, holding two leather suitcases. He looked older in the morning light, the sharp lines of his face softened by defeat. He stood awkwardly for a moment, looking at Clara and their son, realizing the profound magnitude of what he had thrown away for a fleeting distraction in a luxury hotel lobby.
"The taxi is outside," Julian said quietly, his voice devoid of its usual defensive edge.
Clara didn't stand up, but she held Toby securely in her arms. "The attorneys will be in touch regarding the formal settlement terms next week. Make sure you attend the scheduled mediation sessions. Do not make this more difficult for Toby than it already is."
Julian nodded slowly. "I won't. Clara... for what it's worth, I'm sorry."

"Save your apologies for the mirror, Julian," she replied calmly. "They don't mean much here."
He turned and walked out the front door, closing it quietly behind him. The click of the latch echoed through the quiet house, marking the final end of an era. Clara let out a long, slow breath, feeling the last remnants of tension leave her shoulders. She looked down at Toby, who was already reaching for a cereal bowl on the counter, blissfully untouched by the storm that had passed.
