Chapter 5

It was past midnight when the crunch of tires on gravel announced Julian’s arrival. He had clearly abandoned his luxury car or had it towed, arriving instead via an uncharacteristically modest taxi that sped away into the night the moment he stepped out. The front door swung open with a heavy thud, and Julian stumbled into the foyer, his grey suit jacket unbuttoned, his white tie loosened and askew, the pristine facade of corporate invincibility completely shattered.
He found Clara sitting at the kitchen table, the soft glow of a single brass lamp illuminating the steaming mug of tea before her. She didn't look up as he slammed the kitchen door behind him, leaning heavily against the counter to catch his breath.
"Are you insane?" Julian hissed, his voice trembling with a mixture of exhaustion and incandescent rage. "Do you have any idea what you've just done? You’ve frozen every operating account. The board will never stand for this. They’ll vote you out by morning!"
Clara took a slow sip of her tea, setting the ceramic mug down with a soft click before finally raising her eyes to meet his. "Which board, Julian?" she asked calmly. "The one you stacked with your college fraternity brothers, or the independent trustees appointed by the Vanguard family trust who report directly to me?"
Julian flinched as if struck. The color drained from his face once more, leaving him looking hollowed out. "The trust..." he whispered, the realization finally breaking through his denial. "Your grandfather... you’re the principal trustee?"
"I was never just a former risk analyst, Julian," Clara said, her voice steady and devoid of malice, which made it all the more terrifying. "I designed the risk models your department used. I wrote the compliance algorithms that you spent the last eighteen months trying to bypass. You thought my stepping back to care for Toby meant I was out of the game. But every wire transfer, every offshore shell company you set up with Elena, was automatically flagged by the legacy firewall I installed before we were even married."

Julian sank slowly into the chair opposite her, his hands trembling as he gripped the edge of the wood. "Clara... please. We have a family. We have Toby. If the auditors find those accounts, I’m not just losing my job; I’m looking at federal indictments for corporate fraud and embezzlement."
"Then you should have thought about Toby before you decided to spend your business trips playing house in luxury hotels," Clara replied, her gaze unwavering. "The audit is already underway. Marcus Vance is securing the physical drives as we speak. You have until eight o'clock tomorrow morning to sign the voluntary resignation and asset-surrender agreements, or I let the federal prosecutors handle the rest."
