Chapter 6: The Collector of Secrets

Dawn broke over the Connecticut estate, painting the sprawling lawns in shades of frost and pale gold. Arthur Miller did not sleep. He spent the night sitting in the leather chair in his study, staring into the dead ashes of the fireplace, replaying the seven years of his marriage to Julianne. He remembered meeting her in Manhattan—she had been an aspiring art curator, vibrant, ambitious, and effortlessly charming. But as his wealth multiplied and they moved into this isolated mansion, Julianne had slowly withdrawn, turning the house into a pristine museum where human emotion was treated as an unwanted stain on the marble.

Upstairs, Elena moved quietly through the main hallways, her duties calling her despite the impending storm. She carried a silver tray with a cup of black coffee toward the master bedroom, her steps measured and cautious. As she approached the heavy double doors, she noticed they were slightly ajar.

She paused, intending to knock, when a low, cold murmur from within caught her attention.

"...needs to be handled discreetly," Julianne’s voice drifted out into the hallway. "The girl is digging where she shouldn't. If Arthur doesn't get rid of her, I will find another way to ensure she forgets what she saw."

Elena’s breath caught in her throat. She stepped back instinctively, the silver tray rattling slightly in her hands. A second voice—deep, gravelly, and unfamiliar—responded from inside the room.

"The agency checks out, Mrs. Miller. But she's stubborn. Pushing her out won't be as easy as the boy. You need to be careful. Arthur is already suspicious."

"Arthur sees only what I allow him to see," Julianne replied, her tone dripping with absolute arrogance. "He built this empire on blind faith in my choices. He won't destroy it over a maid."

Elena didn't wait to hear more. She turned on her heel and hurried down the corridor toward the back stairs, her pulse pounding in her ears. The realization hit her with sickening force: Julianne wasn't just cold or emotionally detached; she was actively conspiring with an outside party, treating human lives as disposable obstacles in her quest for total control.

She reached the kitchen just as Arthur walked in, looking exhausted, dark circles bruised beneath his eyes. He stopped when he saw her pale, frantic expression.

"Elena," Arthur said, his voice raspy. "You're shaking. What happened?"

"Mr. Miller," Elena whispered, stepping close to him so her voice wouldn't carry. "Your wife isn't just trying to get rid of me. She... she was talking to someone in her bedroom just now. Someone she hired. She's planning something, and it involves Leo."

Arthur stared at her, the last remnants of his skepticism crumbling under the weight of his own growing terror. He grabbed his coat from the back of a chair. "Where is she now?"

"She's still upstairs," Elena said urgently. "We need to check Leo's room. Now."
