Chapter 3: Shadows in the Study

Later that evening, the heavy mahogany doors of Arthur’s private study remained shut, sealing in the tension that had choked the house since the afternoon incident. Arthur sat behind his oversized walnut desk, a glass of scotch untouched at his elbow. The fire in the hearth cast long, dancing shadows across the leather-bound books that lined the walls. He rubbed his temples, the memory of Leo’s small, shaking finger pointing at Julianne replaying behind his eyelids like a broken film loop.

A soft knock interrupted the stillness. The door creaked open just enough for Elena to slip inside. She had changed out of her maid uniform into a simple gray cardigan and dark trousers. Her dark hair was loose now, falling softly around her shoulders, making her look younger, more vulnerable. She kept her hands clasped tightly in front of her.

"Mr. Miller," Elena began, her voice barely above a whisper. "I know I shouldn't be in here, but... I couldn't sleep. And I needed to make sure Master Leo was alright."

"He's asleep," Arthur said without looking up, his gaze fixed on the glowing embers. "The doctor came. Severe bruising, mild concussion, but nothing broken. He'll recover physically."

"And mentally, sir?" Elena pressed gently, taking a slow step forward into the room. "He was terrified today. Not just of the fall. He was terrified of her."

Arthur finally raised his head, his dark eyes narrowing slightly. "You are overstepping your boundaries, Elena. You are employed to maintain this household, not to psychoanalyze my family."

"I’m employed to care for the people in this house," Elena countered, her voice gaining a quiet strength that surprised them both. "And I've worked here for two years, Mr. Miller. I see things that get hidden behind closed doors. Mrs. Miller has been... unraveling. You've been working late in the city, but I'm here every day. I see the way she looks at Leo. Like he's an inconvenience she can't return."

Arthur stood up, pushing his chair back with a sharp scrape. He walked around the desk, stopping a few feet from the young woman. The air between them crackled with an unspoken tension—a mix of shared guilt, fear, and the dangerous territory of mutual distrust.

"Are you accusing my wife of attempted harm against our son?" Arthur demanded, his voice low and intense.

"I am stating what I saw," Elena said steadily, meeting his gaze without flinching. "And if you choose to ignore it because it's easier than facing the truth, then you are just as responsible for what happens next."

Before Arthur could formulate a response, a sharp rap echoed at the study door, followed immediately by it swinging wide open. Julianne stood in the doorway, dressed in a silk robe, her blonde hair catching the firelight. Her expression was unreadable, but her eyes glittered with a cold, predatory intelligence.
