Chapter 1: The Echo of Silence

The heavy silence inside the grand foyer was shattered not by a scream, but by the hollow, rhythmic thud of a small body striking polished white marble. Leo tumbled down the final four steps of the sweeping staircase, his dark blue polo shirt scuffed and his beige pants tearing at the knee. Elena, the young maid whose dark hair was pulled neatly into a bun, dropped her dusting cloth and rushed forward with instinctive terror, sliding across the slick floor to scoop the boy into her arms. She pulled him close, murmuring soft, desperate reassurances against his hair while his small frame trembled with suppressed sobs.
From the upper landing, Julianne looked down. Dressed in her immaculate white sleeveless v-neck midi dress, she did not run. She did not gasp. Her blonde hair fell straight and unruffled around her shoulders, framing a face utterly devoid of maternal panic. Instead, her pale green eyes narrowed into a cold, assessing stare as she watched the tableau unfold below her. She adjusted the strap of her nude high heel, taking a slow, deliberate breath before beginning her descent, her heels clicking like a metronome against the stone steps.
Before Julianne could reach the bottom, the heavy oak front door swung open, admitting a rush of cool autumn air and Arthur. The master of the house strode into the hallway, his dark suit crisp, his expression tight with corporate fatigue. Seeing his son cradled by the maid and his wife descending with chilling composure, Arthur’s jaw clenched. He did not ask if the boy was hurt. His gaze locked onto Elena, whose hands were still trembling as she shielded Leo.
"How dare you drop near the stairs?" Arthur’s voice boomed through the high-ceilinged room, sharp and accusatory, cutting through the heavy tension like a blade.
Elena flinched, opening her mouth to defend herself, but words failed her. She looked up at Arthur with wide, pleading eyes, acutely aware of the power dynamic that rendered her invisible in moments of crisis. But before Arthur could issue a harsher reprimand, a tiny, trembling finger lifted from the crook of Elena’s arm. Leo pulled back slightly, his face pale, his wide eyes fixed not on the maid who held him, but on the woman standing midway down the staircase.

"She... she pushed me," the boy whispered, his voice cracking with a terrifying clarity that froze every breath in the room. Julianne paused on the steps, her expression remaining entirely neutral, while Arthur’s head whipped around to stare at his wife. The foundation of the household cracked in that single, devastating second.
