Chapter 4: The Unwelcome Audience

Julianne’s gaze swept over the scene with clinical detachment, taking in Arthur’s rigid posture and Elena’s defensive stance. She didn't raise her voice, nor did she display any sign of jealousy or outrage. Instead, she offered a thin, chilling smile that seemed to lower the temperature in the room by ten degrees.

"Late-night consultations in the study, Arthur?" Julianne asked smoothly, stepping across the threshold. "How very cinematic. Are we plotting the downfall of the household staff, or are you receiving a late-night performance review from our domestic help?"

Arthur stepped away from Elena, his expression hardening as he faced his wife. "Elena was just updating me on Leo’s condition. Something you apparently had no interest in doing yourself tonight."

"I checked on him twice while you were brooding in here with your scotch," Julianne replied, her tone effortlessly dismissive. She turned her pale green eyes toward Elena, who felt a cold shiver run down her spine. "And as for you, Elena, your shift ended hours ago. Loitering in the master's private study after dark is a violation of your contract. Pack your things in the morning. Your services are no longer required."

"You can't fire her," Arthur interjected sharply, stepping between his wife and the young maid. "Not over this. Not when we need stability."

"Stability?" Julianne laughed softly, a dry, humorless sound. "Arthur, she has poisoned our son's mind against me. She stood there and watched him fabricate a monstrous lie, encouraging him to point fingers at his own mother. If I keep her in this house for another twenty-four hours, there won't be a marriage left to salvage, let alone a family."

Elena felt the ground slipping away beneath her feet. She had expected pushback, but the sheer speed with which Julianne weaponized the narrative was terrifying. Yet, Elena refused to back down entirely. She stepped out from Arthur's shadow, her voice steady despite her racing pulse.

"I didn't encourage him, Mrs. Miller," Elena said clearly. "Master Leo spoke the truth. And firing me won't change what happened on those stairs today. Sweeping things under the rug only works until someone trips."

Julianne’s eyes narrowed into slits. For a fraction of a second, the mask slipped, revealing a flash of genuine, unbridled fury beneath the polished surface. But just as quickly, the composure returned. She looked at Arthur, her voice dropping to a dangerously calm register.

"Choose, Arthur," she whispered. "Her or me. Tonight."

The silence that followed was absolute. Arthur looked from his wife’s unyielding gaze to Elena’s desperate, hopeful eyes. The weight of his corporate empire, his social standing, and his entire life hung in the balance, resting precariously on the edge of a choice he had never wanted to make.
