Chapter 14: The Final Verdict

The judge studied the documents submitted by Detective Vance for what felt like an eternity. The silence in the courtroom was absolute, broken only by the faint hum of the overhead ventilation system. Julianne stared straight ahead, her hands resting calmly on the mahogany table, though a slight twitch in her jaw betrayed the boiling fury beneath her composed exterior.
"The court has reviewed the financial disclosures, the medical reports from Leo Miller’s recent trauma, and the authenticated communications intercepted by state investigators," the judge announced, his voice echoing authoritatively through the vaulted room. "The evidence of planned asset misappropriation and severe endangerment is comprehensive and undisputed."
He looked directly at Julianne. "Your motion for bail is denied, Mrs. Miller. Furthermore, the emergency asset freeze requested by Mr. Miller is granted in full, along with temporary sole custody awarded to the father. A permanent custody and criminal hearing will be scheduled within thirty days."
The gavel came down with a sharp, resounding crack.
Julianne’s expression didn't crumble, but the cold shell finally fractured. Her attorneys immediately began packing their briefcases, their enthusiasm evaporating the moment the financial security of their retainer vanished. As two bailiffs stepped forward to escort Julianne back to her holding cell, she turned her head slowly to look at Arthur one last time.
"You think you won, Arthur," she whispered, her voice carrying a venomous chill that made the hair on the back of his neck stand up. "You think you can erase me from the life we built together. But a man who built his entire empire on lies will always find that his foundation turns to dust the moment the rain finally falls."
She didn't wait for a response. She turned and walked out with her head held high, the heavy steel door clicking shut behind her.

Arthur exhaled a breath he felt he had been holding for seven years. The weight on his shoulders didn't magically vanish, but for the first time, he could breathe. He thanked Detective Vance, shook his hand, and walked out of the courthouse into the crisp Connecticut air. The media sharks were still shouting questions, but he ignored them entirely, getting back into his SUV and driving home.
