Chapter 13: The Courthouse Showdown

The federal courthouse in Hartford was a monolith of gray limestone and towering pillars, surrounded by a swarm of media reporters and camera crews who had caught wind of the financial scandal unfolding within the Miller household. Flashbulbs popped blindingly as Arthur’s luxury SUV pulled up to the security checkpoint. He stepped out, his dark suit jacket buttoned tightly, his face carved from stone as he marched past the shouting journalists without uttering a single word.
Inside, the air was cool, smelling of polished wood and old paper. Detective Vance was waiting for him near the clerk's office, holding a thick manila folder filled with corporate affidavits and emergency injunction forms.
"You made good time," Vance said, handing Arthur a pen. "The judge is reviewing the initial asset freeze request right now, but we need your signature on the primary trust revocation to legally block Julianne's offshore override."
Arthur didn't hesitate. He took the pen and signed his name across the bottom of the document with firm, decisive strokes. "Is she still in custody?"
"For now," Vance replied, guiding him toward Courtroom 3B. "Her legal team is arguing procedural technicalities, claiming her constitutional rights were violated during the initial apprehension at your estate. But if this injunction goes through, her financial leverage vanishes. Without her money, her high-priced lawyers won't work for free."
They pushed open the heavy oak doors of the courtroom. Julianne was already seated at the defense table, flanked by two sharp-looking attorneys in immaculate charcoal suits. She looked immaculate, wearing a tailored gray blazer over a white silk blouse, her blonde hair pinned back with severe elegance. As Arthur entered, she turned her head slightly, her pale green eyes locking onto his with a chilling, venomous intensity.
She didn't look like a woman who was defeated; she looked like a chess player calculating her final, desperate gambit.
The federal judge, a stern-faced man with wire-rimmed glasses, adjusted his spectacles and looked down from the bench. "Mr. Miller, your legal counsel has submitted emergency filings regarding asset protection and child welfare. Before I rule on the injunction, do you have anything to add regarding the custody arrangements for your son?"
Arthur stepped forward, his heart hammering against his ribs, but his voice remained steady and clear. "Your Honor, my wife’s actions over the past week demonstrate a clear, calculated threat not only to my financial stability, but to the physical and psychological safety of my seven-year-old son, Leo. I am petitioning for full, unconditioned sole custody, with a permanent restraining order prohibiting any contact."

Julianne’s lead attorney immediately stood up to object, but the judge raised a single hand, silencing the courtroom instantly.
