Chapter 8 - The Remote Wipe

The flashing red text cast an eerie crimson glow across Clara’s face as the encrypted file on her smartphone dissolved into a cascade of meaningless computer code.
"Dad, the file just deleted itself," Clara said quickly, holding the screen up toward the camera. "A remote override command just wiped the entire local database from our servers."
Thomas Vance leaned closer to his monitor, his eyes narrowing as he watched the screen go blank. "They anticipated the raid. Marcus knew that the moment Arthur was cornered, our security team would pull the hard drives. He had a dead-man's switch installed on the primary server."
"Can we recover it?" Clara asked, her fingers flying across the screen to check the cloud backup sync status, only to find every recovery point locked behind a multi-layered cryptographic barrier.
"Not without the physical master key," Thomas replied grimly. "And the only physical master key to the Stag Management server architecture is housed on a hardware token currently in the possession of Arthur's primary contact—a lawyer named Jonathan Vance, who operates out of a private office in downtown Manhattan."
Clara paused, the gears turning rapidly in her mind. Jonathan Vance—a distant cousin she had barely spoken to in years, who had quietly handled the family's legal discrepancies whenever a scandal threatened to break the surface. If Jonathan was tied to Marcus, then the entire inner circle of their family was compromised.
"Jonathan," Clara murmured. "He was at our anniversary dinner last month. He smiled, shook my hand, and all the while he was helping Arthur draft the asset-stripping contracts."
"He’s dangerous, Clara," Thomas warned, his voice rising in urgency through the phone speaker. "Jonathan isn't just a lawyer; he’s Marcus’s legal proxy. If you go after that master key, you are walking directly into their trap."
Clara didn't answer immediately. She looked around the cavernous, silent dining room. The opulence of the estate suddenly felt like a cage. Arthur was gone, arrested and hauled off to a holding cell, but the invisible tendrils of Marcus Vance’s conspiracy were still wrapped tightly around her life. She couldn't just sit here and wait for the federal authorities to untangle a web that took twelve years to spin.
"I'm not waiting for the feds, Dad," Clara said firmly, her voice leaving no room for argument. "If Jonathan has the master key, I'm going to get it."
Before Thomas could reply, the heavy front door of the mansion suddenly rattled. Not with the polite knock of a visitor or the heavy boot of a police officer, but with the distinct, metallic click of a master skeleton key turning in the deadbolt.
Clara froze. The police had left minutes ago. The security team was stationed outside. No one should have been able to bypass the exterior perimeter alarms without triggering a high-priority alert on her father's private monitoring network.

"Dad," Clara whispered, her eyes fixed on the arched entryway leading out into the grand foyer. "Someone's in the house."
