Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Empire

The sharp rap of knuckles on the heavy oak dining room doors interrupted the heavy silence before the handle turned and the door pushed open. A local police officer, flanked by two uniformed deputies, stepped into the opulent room, taking in the bizarre scene: the ruined table, the spilled wine, the corporate investigators standing like statues, and Arthur Sterling slumped in defeat at the head of the table.
"We received an automated priority distress signal linked to Vance Global security protocols," the police lieutenant said, his eyes scanning the room before resting on Clara's bruised temple. "Is everyone alright here? Ma'am, do you need medical attention?"
Clara lowered the white napkin from her forehead, letting the overhead light fully illuminate the dark, clotting scratch and the faint swelling around her eye. "I'm fine, Lieutenant. The physical damage is the least of my concerns. You're just in time to take a statement."
Arthur didn't move. He sat paralyzed, staring at the polished wood of the table where his entire life's work was systematically being dismantled. The investigator holding the tablet stepped forward, handing the device directly to the police lieutenant.
"Here are the digital forensic logs, officer," the investigator said smoothly. "Full documentation of corporate embezzlement, fraudulent wire transfers, and identity manipulation totaling over four million dollars. The suspect has verbally admitted to the primary charges on a recorded line."
"That was under duress!" Arthur suddenly screamed, leaping from his chair with a final, pathetic burst of adrenaline. He pointed a shaking finger at Clara. "She provoked me! She drove me to this! She trapped me from the very beginning!"
The two deputies moved instantly, stepping forward to pin Arthur’s arms behind his back and snapping cold steel handcuffs around his wrists with practiced efficiency. The metal clicked shut with a sharp, final sound that echoed through the grand room like a gunshot. Arthur struggled weakly against them, his expensive suit jacket bunching up around his shoulders, his face flushed with a mixture of humiliation and rage.
"You'll pay for this, Clara!" Arthur shouted, his voice cracking as he was hauled toward the doorway. "You think you've won, but you're tied to my debts! Every asset we share is going down with me!"
Clara watched him go without flinching, her expression remaining completely composed. She didn't yell back, nor did she shed another tear. She simply watched the man she had loved and trusted for a decade get dragged out of the house he had built on a foundation of lies and theft.
Aunt Beatrice suddenly reappeared in the doorway, wringing her hands, her face ghostly pale beneath her heavy makeup. "Clara, please... you must believe me. I didn't know anything about the offshore accounts. Arthur told me the money came from his inheritance!"
Clara turned her dark, unblinking gaze toward the older woman, letting the silence stretch out until Beatrice practically shrank under the weight of her scrutiny.
"Save it for the grand jury, Aunt Beatrice," Clara said softly, her voice carrying a chilling finality. "The forensic accountants are already reviewing your personal trust fund."
Before Beatrice could utter another word of defense, a sharp, urgent chime rang out from the smartphone resting on the white tablecloth. Clara walked over, picked up the device, and glanced at the screen. A new encrypted message had just arrived from an unknown sender, containing a single document attachment labeled with her father's private seal.

Clara tapped the screen, her eyes scanning the first few lines of the text, and her breath caught sharply in her throat as she realized the embezzlement was only the tip of the iceberg.
