Chapter 2 - The Echoes of Betrayal

The hum of the phone line was deafening in the suddenly suffocating atmosphere of the dining room. Arthur’s hand remained suspended over the table, his face draining of what little color it had left as the gravity of Clara’s call fully registered in his mind. He knew who was listening on the other end of the line. It was Thomas Vance, Clara’s father and the majority shareholder of Vance Global, the very conglomerate Arthur had been systematically bleeding dry for the past three years to fund his secret offshore accounts.
"Hang that phone up right now, Clara," Arthur hissed, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low register as he circled the table like a cornered predator. "You have no idea what you are unravelling. Think about the scandal. Think about what this does to our standing in society."
Clara did not move an inch. The white napkin was still pressed to the bleeding cut on her temple, the fabric now stained with a mix of wine, sweat, and blood. She stared past Arthur, watching Aunt Beatrice quietly gather her small beaded handbag and begin backing away toward the grand double doors of the dining room. Beatrice’s face was pale, drained of its usual haughty arrogance, replaced by the profound realization that she had spent decades defending a fraud.
"You cared about our standing when you were buying your second vacation home in the Caymans with my father's capital," Clara said evenly into the phone, her voice barely above a whisper, yet it echoed clearly off the high vaulted ceilings. "Keep listening, Dad. He is about to tell you where the missing four million went."
Arthur lunged around the corner of the table, his arm outstretched to swat the device out of her hand, but he stopped short as the heavy oak doors clicked shut behind Aunt Beatrice. He was trapped in his own house, cornered by a woman he had underestimated for a decade. The police could be twenty minutes away, but Thomas Vance’s private security detail was already stationed three miles down the coastal highway.
"You are destroying everything we built," Arthur snarled, his chest heaving as he stared at the smartphone pressed tightly against her ear. "The house, the accounts, our entire life. Is that what you want?"
"We never had a life, Arthur," Clara replied, her dark eyes flashing with a cold, hardened brilliance that made his stomach drop. "We had an elaborate hostage situation disguised as a marriage."
She turned her head slightly, the phone still clutched in her hand, listening intently to the deep, gravelly voice speaking from miles away. A grim, victorious smile flickered at the corner of her lips for a fraction of a second before vanishing back into her mask of sorrow.

"He's sending someone," Clara whispered, looking directly into Arthur's wide, panicked eyes. "And he said to tell you the audit starts in twenty minutes."
