Chapter 7 - The Ghost of the Past

The name hung in the air like a phantom, tearing open a wound Clara had thought long healed. Marcus Vance—her uncle, her father’s brilliant and ruthless business partner, a man whose portrait had been quietly removed from the corporate gallery after his fiery, catastrophic disappearance a dozen years ago. The official narrative had always been a tragic accident over the Atlantic, a mechanical failure that consumed both the aircraft and the man.

"Marcus is dead," Clara said, her voice dropping to a trembling whisper as she stared at her father through the screen. "We attended the memorial service. We buried an empty casket because there was nothing left to recover."

"That was the narrative we gave the public to protect the company's valuation," Thomas replied, his voice laced with bitter regret. "Marcus didn't die in that crash, Clara. He staged it. He emptied his accounts, handed off the flight controls to a hired mercenary who parachuted out before impact, and vanished into the shadows with half our intellectual property and a burning desire to destroy everything I built."

Clara gripped the edge of the mahogany table, her knuckles turning white. The pieces of the puzzle were finally snapping together, forming a picture far more sinister than simple marital betrayal. Arthur wasn't just a rogue husband who lost his moral compass; he was an operative in a decades-long vendetta orchestrated by a man long thought dead.

"And Arthur... Arthur married me because I was the key to unlocking the final tier of the Venture Alpha security protocols," Clara realized aloud, the horror washing over her in a cold wave. "The biometric encryption on the primary trust requires a direct bloodline descendant of Thomas Vance. That’s why he targeted me. That’s why he courted me so aggressively. The marriage wasn't a romance; it was a cyber-heist."

"Precisely," Thomas nodded grimly. "And tonight, when he realized you had caught onto his financial embezzlement, he panicked. He didn't just throw a glass of wine out of anger; he threw it because he knew his cover was blown and he was trying to intimidate you into silence before you could access the main terminal."

Clara looked down at her white button-down shirt, still stained with the deep red wine and her own blood. The vulnerability she had felt earlier evaporated, replaced by a cold, calculating fury that matched her father's. If Marcus Vance was still alive, pulling Arthur's strings from the shadows, then the game wasn't over. It was only just beginning.

"Where is he, Dad?" Clara asked, her voice steady, hard, and resolute.

Thomas hesitated, glancing down at a paper document resting on his desk before looking back up into the camera lens with a troubled expression.

"We tracked the IP address of the remote server communicating with Arthur's basement setup," Thomas said slowly. "It didn't route through the Cayman Islands or Switzerland. It routed directly from a private island off the coast of Maine—an estate legally registered under a defunct shell corporation named Stag Management."

Clara stared at her father, her mind racing as she pieced together her next move. Stag Management was the exact holding company mentioned in the final page of the PDF file on her phone. She looked down at the screen to check the address, but as she did, the document suddenly vanished, replaced by a stark, flashing red warning box that read: System Override Initiated. Local Database Wiped.
