Chapter 6 - The Encrypted File

The glowing blue light of the smartphone illuminated Clara’s face in the dimming ambiance of the dining room as the police escorted Arthur out into the night. The heavy oak doors clicked shut behind them, leaving behind an eerie quiet that felt heavier than the chaos preceding it. Aunt Beatrice had already fled down the corridor, terrified of facing the impending financial ruin that Clara had promised.

Clara stood alone by the ruined table, her thumb hovering over the attached document on her screen. The file name read: Vance_Global_Venture_Alpha_Restricted.pdf. Her father, Thomas Vance, was notoriously protective of the Venture Alpha portfolio. It was the secretive division of his conglomerate that handled high-level acquisitions, foreign investments, and assets that never appeared on public quarterly earnings reports.

She tapped the icon, and the document expanded, revealing a dense network of corporate structures, offshore holding entities, and signatures. But what made her blood run cold wasn't the mention of shell companies or millions of dollars in shifting capital. It was the name listed as the primary beneficiary of Venture Alpha’s secondary trust account—an entity registered under the name Sterling Holdings LLC.

"That's impossible," Clara whispered to herself, her eyes darting across the glowing text. Arthur hadn't just stolen from the public-facing accounts of Vance Global; he had systematically been funneled money directly from her father’s most secretive personal portfolio. And more disturbingly, the creation date of the Sterling Holdings trust predated her marriage to Arthur by a full two years.

The smartphone vibrated sharply in her hand, startling her. An incoming video call request flashed across the display, bearing her father’s direct extension. She swiped to accept, and Thomas Vance’s stern, unsmiling face materialized on the screen, framed by the dark, wood-paneled walls of his private study miles away.

"You opened the file," Thomas stated, his voice devoid of surprise.

"Dad, what is this?" Clara demanded, her voice rising slightly as the full weight of the deception crashed down upon her. "Arthur didn't just infiltrate our company by accident. He had access to Venture Alpha before we even met. How is that possible? Did you know about this?"

Thomas sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose as if carrying the weight of a century. "I suspected it, Clara. But I didn't have the hard proof until my internal security team mirrored his office hard drives tonight. Arthur wasn't just a corporate climber who fell into your life by chance. He was planted there."

Clara stared at the screen, the room spinning slightly around her. The cut on her temple throbbed fiercely, a sharp reminder of the physical violence that had served as the catalyst for this nightmare. "Planted by whom? Who could possibly have the clearance to embed someone into Vance Global's inner circle?"

Thomas looked away from the camera for a brief second, his jaw tightening before he looked back into her eyes with an expression of grim determination.

"The person who taught Arthur everything he knows about corporate espionage," Thomas said slowly. "My former business partner, and the man who supposedly died in a private plane crash twelve years ago—Marcus Vance."
