Chapter 1 - The Crimson Glass

The chandelier of the Sterling estate cast a cold, merciless brilliance across the mahogany dining table, illuminating the untouched silver and the wreckage of a marriage built on embezzlement and deceit. Arthur Sterling stood at the head of the table, his chest heaving under his tailored dark suit, his face contorted into a mask of pure, unbridled fury as droplets of deep red cabernet dripped from the pristine white linen cloth. His short dark hair was slightly tousled, matching the violent twitch in his jaw. Across from him sat Clara, her dark hair pinned back in an elegant updo that now felt entirely out of place amidst the chaos, wearing a white button-down shirt that was rapidly staining pink.

"You shouldn't have done that!" Arthur shouted, his voice cracking with a toxic mix of panic and rage as he pointed a trembling finger at her.

Clara did not flinch, though a crimson streak began to trace a path down her pale temple from a sharp scratch she had barely felt happen. She picked up a crisp white napkin, pressing it gently to her bleeding skin while a single tear traced a hot, silent trail down her cheek.

"You shouldn't have done that," Clara whispered back, her tone steady, devoid of the hysterical shouting Arthur expected from her, carrying an eerie, calculated calmness that terrified him far more than screams ever could.

Aunt Beatrice, seated to their right in her immaculate beige lace dress and glittering diamond necklace, gasped audibly, pressing a manicured hand to her chest as if she could physically hold her racing heart inside her ribs. She looked between them with eyes wide with shock and alarm, realizing in real-time that the opulent facade of the Sterling family fortune was finally crumbling into dust.

Ignoring them both, Clara reached out with her unblemished hand and snatched her smartphone off the white tablecloth, the screen illuminating her bruised features in a harsh blue light.

Arthur lunged forward, leaning aggressively over the table, his knuckles turning white as he slammed his hand down onto the polished wood.

"Put the phone down!" Arthur roared, spitting the words out like venom.

Clara ignored his command entirely, raising the device to her ear and holding his furious gaze with a look of absolute, unyielding determination.

"Dad," she said softly into the receiver, her voice cutting through the heavy silence of the dining room like a scalpel, leaving Arthur frozen in sheer terror as he realized who was on the other end of the line.
