Chapter 8 - The Shattered Window

The sharp sound of shattering glass cut through the quiet kitchen like a gunshot. Julian snapped his head toward the dark hallway leading to the front of the sprawling mansion. Instinctively, he stepped in front of Maya and the sleeping baby, his arms spread wide as if his torn tuxedo could somehow act as a shield against whatever terror was waiting in the dark.

"Stay here," Julian commanded in a low, fierce whisper, his eyes darting around the room for a weapon. His hand grazed the heavy silver candlestick sitting on the dining pass-through, and he gripped it tightly by the base.

Maya didn't panic. She adjusted little Leo against her shoulder, her eyes narrowing as she stared at the shadows stretching across the kitchen floor. She knew Eleanor’s network of corrupt associates wouldn't go down quietly. The arrest was just the opening salvo; the real war for the Vance empire was happening right now in the shadows.

A heavy thump echoed from the formal dining room, followed by the unmistakable sound of heavy boots crunching on broken glass.

"Julian! Drop the candlestick and put your hands where I can see them!" a harsh, raspy voice shouted from the darkness of the hallway.

A tall figure stepped into the dim perimeter light of the kitchen. It was not a federal agent, nor was it a common burglar. It was Victor Thorne, the chief of security for Vance Holdings—a man built like a tank, wearing a tailored black tactical suit, with a suppressed automatic pistol held low and steady in his right hand. Victor’s face was twisted into an ugly, threatening sneer.

"Victor," Julian snarled, his knuckles white as he tightened his grip on the silver candlestick. "You work for the family. What the hell do you think you're doing breaking into my house?"

Victor let out a harsh, dry laugh that sounded like sandpaper rubbing together.

"I don't work for your mother anymore, Julian," Victor replied, taking a slow, deliberate step forward into the kitchen light. "Mrs. Vance is locked up, and Marcus Sterling is currently boarding a flight to the Caymans. That leaves a very large, very lucrative vacuum at the top of Vance Holdings. And your little wife here just cleared out the primary accounts."

Victor’s cold, dead eyes shifted from Julian to fix directly on Maya. The pistol drifted upward, tracking slowly toward the spot where Maya stood holding the baby.

"Hand over the leather ledger, Mrs. Vance," Victor demanded, his voice dropping into a menacing hum. "Or I'll make sure your baby's first birthday is his last."

Julian let out an animalistic roar of pure rage. He lunged forward, abandoning all self-preservation, raising the heavy silver candlestick to bring it crashing down onto Victor’s skull.

"Don't you dare touch my family!" Julian screamed.

Victor reacted with terrifying speed. He sidestepped Julian’s clumsy charge with practiced ease, bringing the butt of his suppressed pistol down hard against the back of Julian’s head. Julian collapsed to the tile floor with a sickening thud, his body going completely limp, blood instantly pooling around his short dark hair against the white kitchen tiles.

"Julian!" Maya screamed, her voice cracking with pure terror as she watched her husband fall.

Victor stepped over Julian’s motionless body, his boots clicking rhythmically against the floor as he closed the distance between himself and Maya. He reached out a gloved hand, grabbing the front of Maya’s beige satin slip dress and hauling her forward.

"Now, give me the book, bitch," Victor hissed inches from her face, pressing the cold barrel of the pistol directly against little Leo’s tiny, trembling form.

Maya looked down at her unconscious husband, then at the gun pressed against her son, and slowly reached into her pocket. Her fingers wrapped around the worn leather ledger—but as she pulled it out, she pressed a hidden emergency panic button stitched secretly into the spine of the book.

A loud, piercing alarm shrieked through the house, and red strobe lights suddenly flashed to life across every ceiling in the mansion.

Victor cursed loudly, but before he could pull the trigger, the kitchen pantry door was violently kicked inward from behind.
