Chapter 6 - Federal Mandate

The heavy brass knocker pounded against the front door again, shaking the drywall in the hallway.
"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Open the door!" a deep, authoritative voice commanded from the porch.
The sound of boots echoing on the marble foyer tiles shattered whatever fragile reality remained in the kitchen. Eleanor stood paralyzed, the printed digital ledger fluttering from her trembling fingers to land in the puddle of spilled compost near her feet. Her immaculate coiffure was slightly disheveled, and the stain on her sequin gown seemed to mock her crumbling dignity.
Marcus Sterling reacted with the swift survival instinct of a corporate lawyer facing indictment. He instantly snapped his leather briefcase shut, locked the clasps with a sharp click, and took two steps toward the pantry door.
"Where do you think you're going, Marcus?" Julian barked, his voice laced with venom as he grabbed the lawyer by the sleeve of his designer suit. "You represent this family—you stay right here and explain how my mother stole an entire empire!"
"Unhand me, Julian, or you'll be facing obstruction charges alongside your mother," Marcus hissed, ripping his arm free and disappearing down the hallway toward the back service exit.
Heavy footsteps flooded the kitchen as three federal agents in dark tactical windbreakers swarmed the room. The lead agent, a tall woman with sharp gray eyes and a badge pinned to her belt, surveyed the chaotic scene—the towering stack of dirty dishes, the spilled food waste, and the bizarre tableau of high society colliding with absolute ruin.
"Eleanor Vance?" the lead agent asked, stepping directly up to the aging matriarch.
Eleanor raised her chin with a pathetic display of her former arrogance, though her lower lip visibly trembled.
"Do you know who I am?" Eleanor snapped, attempting to channel decades of untouchable privilege. "I demand to speak to the Director of the FBI immediately! This is an outrage!"
"You're under arrest, Mrs. Vance, for wire fraud, securities manipulation, and the suppression of federal evidence dating back thirty years," the agent stated coldly, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from her belt. "And you're coming with us right now."
Maya watched quietly as the cold metal cuffs clicked around Eleanor’s frail wrists. The woman who had terrorized her, starved her of sleep, and treated her like a non-person was suddenly reduced to a common criminal. Little Leo began to fuss again, sensing the heavy, hostile energy in the room, and Maya gently rocked him against her chest, patting his tiny back.
Julian stared at his mother in utter disbelief, his hands hanging limply at his sides. The tuxedo that had felt like armor just an hour ago now felt like a cheap costume.
"Mother... is it true?" Julian whispered, his voice cracking with anguish. "Did you really kill my father?"
Eleanor didn't look at her son. As the agents turned her around to lead her out of the kitchen, her pale blue eyes locked onto Maya one last time with a look of pure, unadulterated hatred.
"You think you've won, you ungrateful parasite," Eleanor spat over her shoulder as she was escorted toward the door. "You don't know the first thing about running what's in that ledger. By morning, you won't just be ruined—you'll be dead."
The heavy oak front door slammed shut behind the federal agents, leaving Julian, Maya, and the baby alone in the wrecked kitchen.
Julian turned slowly to face his wife, the look in his eyes sending a cold shiver down Maya’s spine.

"Maya," Julian said softly, his voice trembling. "What else is in that book?"
