Chapter 11 - The Grand Ballroom

The crystal chandeliers of the Grand ballroom at the Manhattan Plaza cast a blinding, artificial radiance over hundreds of high-society guests sipping Dom Pérignon in designer tuxedos and glittering evening gowns. The room hummed with nervous whispers and speculative gossip regarding Eleanor Vance’s mysterious absence from the opening hour of her own foundation gala. Armed security guards stood discreetly near the mahogany double doors, their earpieces glowing with blue indicator lights as they monitored the elite crowd.
Julian Vance pushed open the massive mahogany doors, stepping across the threshold with his shoulders squared and his head held high. He wore a freshly pressed black tuxedo that fit him like a second skin, his dark hair neatly trimmed, completely hiding the heavy bandage on the back of his head. Beside him walked Maya. She wore a breathtaking, floor-length black silk gown that mirrored the quiet, lethal elegance of a blade. Her hair was pulled back into the exact neat low bun from the night before, anchoring her striking, emotionless visage.
Murmurs rippled through the crowd nearest the entrance. Heads turned, champagne flutes paused halfway to open mouths, and nervous whispers broke out like wildfire.
"Isn't that Julian Vance? Where is Eleanor?" a prominent senator’s wife whispered loudly, clutching her diamond necklace.
"I heard the federal marshals took her into custody at dawn," a hedge-fund manager muttered back, his eyes darting anxiously toward the stage.
Julian ignored them all. He locked his arm securely through Maya’s, guiding her smoothly past the gaggle of gaping socialites toward the front of the ballroom, where the executive board sat at the elevated head table. Seated directly in the center was Acting CEO Richard Vance, Eleanor’s ruthless younger cousin, who was currently tapping a silver spoon against his crystal glass to call for silence.
Richard cleared his throat into the wireless microphone, forcing a strained, corporate smile that didn't reach his cold, calculating eyes.
"Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed partners of Vance Holdings," Richard announced, his amplified voice booming across the cavernous ballroom. "Before we begin our annual philanthropic auction, I have an urgent corporate announcement regarding the stabilization of our primary trust assets following a brief... administrative irregularity last night."
Julian and Maya stopped at the base of the stage steps. Julian’s jaw clenched, a muscle jumping in his trimmed beard, but Maya raised a single finger to gently silence him.
Richard scanned the crowd, his eyes eventually locking onto Julian and Maya standing at the foot of the stage. A malicious, triumphant smirk crept across his face.
"As acting CEO, and with the unanimous emergency backing of our board," Richard continued, raising his voice to project absolute dominance, "we are officially invoking the forfeiture clause against Julian Vance and his unauthorized spouse. Effective immediately, their membership in this family and all corporate distributions are permanently revoked."
A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom, followed by a heavy, suffocating silence. Richard raised his glass, preparing to seal their total destruction.
Before Richard could utter another word, the massive overhead projection screen behind the head table flickered violently, cutting off the corporate presentation logo and replacing it with a blinking red warning sign.
Richard spun around, his face turning the color of ash.
"Cut that feed!" Richard screamed into his microphone, signaling the AV crew frantically.

Too late. The screen burst into full high-definition video, broadcasting live footage from inside the federal detention center holding Eleanor Vance, alongside thirty years of hidden bank routing numbers.
