Chapter 4 - The Midnight Ledger

The landline continued its shrill, relentless ringing, vibrating against the stainless steel surface of the counter. Nobody moved. The sound felt like a digital countdown to their total destruction. Maya felt her knees grow weak, the physical exhaustion of twenty-four hours without sleep finally catching up to her. Little Leo let out a soft, exhausted whine, burying his face deeper into the damp fabric of Maya’s beige slip dress.
Marcus Sterling cleared his throat, breaking the heavy silence. With agonizing slowness, he reached across the mountain of unwashed china, picked up the receiver, and pressed it to his ear.
"Sterling here," the lawyer stated flatly, his eyes never leaving Julian’s pale, sweat-slicked face.
A heavy pause hung in the air. Marcus’s professional, unreadable expression suddenly twitched. His eyebrows knitted together, and his posture shifted from relaxed arrogance to something resembling mild confusion. He pulled the phone away for a fraction of a second, staring at the device as if it had suddenly transformed into a venomous snake, before bringing it back to his ear.
"Repeat that," Marcus commanded, his voice dropping its authoritative edge and taking on a sharper, more urgent cadence. "Are you entirely certain of the routing number? ... Check the offshore accounts again. All of them."
Julian took a slow step forward, his eyes darting between the lawyer and his mother. The reckless anger that had fueled him earlier was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, creeping dread.
"What is it, Marcus?" Julian demanded, his voice cracking slightly. "What has the board done now?"
Eleanor frowned, her aristocratic composure slipping for the first time since she had walked through the front door. She stepped closer to the lawyer, her ruined sequin gown rustling against the counter.
"Marcus, answer me. What is happening with the Vance Holdings liquidity transfer?" Eleanor demanded, her tone sharp.
Marcus slowly lowered the receiver onto the cradle. He looked directly at Eleanor, then at Julian, and finally let his gaze land on Maya, who stood clutching her baby near the sink. The lawyer’s face had gone remarkably pale.
"The Vance family trust isn't just frozen, Eleanor," Marcus said, his voice barely above a whisper. "It’s empty."
A collective gasp seemed to suck the remaining oxygen out of the room. Julian stumbled backward, his hip catching the edge of the kitchen table.
"Empty?" Julian yelled, his voice echoing hysterically. "That's impossible! We hold billions in liquid assets, real estate holdings across three continents, and blue-chip stocks! How can an entire empire vanish in five minutes?"
"It didn't vanish," Marcus replied, pulling a printed digital ledger out of his briefcase and dropping it onto the table. "It was legally transferred out of the primary accounts exactly twelve minutes ago. Every single penny."
Maya stared at the ledger, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Eleanor lunged forward, snatching the paper from the table, her eyes scanning the lines of code with frantic disbelief.
"Transferred to whom?" Eleanor shrieked, her voice losing all its regal polish. "By whose authorization?!"
Marcus swallowed hard, adjusting his glasses with a trembling finger.
May you like
"By the primary beneficiary," Marcus said slowly. "Maya Vance."
