Chapter 3 - The Inheritance Clause

The heavy wooden front door swung inward without a knock, pushed open by a tall, sharply dressed man carrying a sleek leather briefcase. Marcus Sterling, senior partner at Vance family legal counsel, stepped into the foyer with the calculated precision of an executioner. His graying temples and rimless glasses gave him an air of ruthless competence. He bypassed the lingering smell of food waste with practiced indifference, his sharp eyes scanning the chaotic scene before landing directly on Julian.
"Good evening, Julian. Eleanor," Marcus nodded coldly, barely acknowledging Maya, who still stood paralyzed by the sink with the crying baby. "I received your urgent midnight summons, Eleanor. Though I didn't expect to find the Vance estate looking quite like a demolition site."
Eleanor adjusted her ruined, stained sequin gown with haughty disdain, stepping past her son as if he were a piece of discarded furniture.
"Cut the pleasantries, Marcus," Eleanor commanded, gesturing grandly toward the thick leather folder she had left sitting atop the pile of dirty dinner plates. "Execute the forfeiture clause immediately. Section Four, Paragraph B of the master trust indenture."
Julian lunged forward, his face turning an alarming shade of crimson. He intercepted the lawyer before Marcus could reach the counter, his hands gripping the lapels of the man’s expensive designer suit.
"You can't do that, Marcus! That trust was established by my grandfather for the direct lineal descendants, not as a weapon for a bitter tyrant!" Julian shouted, his voice echoing off the high kitchen ceilings.
Marcus remained completely unphased, smoothly removing Julian’s hands from his suit and adjusting his tie.
"I am merely the instrument of the legal framework, Julian," Marcus replied, his tone chillingly professional. "Your grandfather’s will explicitly states that any direct heir who commits an act of public violence against a trustee—or otherwise brings severe public humiliation upon the family name—forfeits all immediate financial distributions. The board was notified electronically five minutes ago."
Maya’s breath caught in her throat. She looked at Julian, seeing the stark terror finally break through his defiant facade. All their luxurious homes, the luxury cars, the private accounts, and the security they had taken for granted—gone in a single, impulsive act of defense.
"We're ruined," Maya whispered, the words tasting like ash.
Eleanor walked over to stand beside the lawyer, her smile widening into a triumphant grin. She reached out and tapped the leather folder with a manicured nail.
"Not quite ruined, my dear," Eleanor purred, turning her icy blue eyes back to Maya. "You can keep your clothes. But you leave this house with nothing else. And as for custody of the child—"

Before Eleanor could finish her sentence, the kitchen phone began to ring relentlessly, its shrill tone cutting through the suffocating tension in the room.
