Chapter 10 - The Gala Invitation

The morning sun broke over the Manhattan skyline, painting the towering glass monoliths of Vance Holdings in cold, merciless shades of gray and gold. Inside the master bedroom of the East Hampton estate, the air was thick with the scent of dried blood, burnt coffee, and panic. Julian groaned softly, his eyelids fluttering open as a sharp, throbbing pain pierced the base of his skull. He blinked repeatedly, trying to focus his vision against the bright morning light streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

"Easy, son. Don't try to sit up too fast," Silas Vance’s voice rumbled from the corner of the room.

Julian turned his head slowly, wincing as a fresh wave of nausea hit him. He was lying on top of the crisp white Egyptian cotton sheets of his own bed, still wearing the ruined, grease-stained black tuxedo jacket. Standing near the window, peering through the heavy velvet drapes down at the driveway below, was Silas. And sitting at the vanity mirror across the room, brushing her dark hair into a neat, flawless low bun, was Maya.

Julian propped himself up on one elbow, his hand flying to the thick gauze bandage taped firmly to the back of his head.

"Silas...?" Julian muttered, his voice raspy and dry. He looked back and forth between the older man and his wife, his brain struggling to piece together the terrifying events of the previous night. "I... I thought you were dead. My mother said—"

"Your mother lied about everything, Julian," Silas interrupted, turning away from the window and walking slowly toward the bed. His expression was grave, his eyes carrying the heavy weight of decades of stolen history. "She stole my inheritance, framed me for embezzlement, and locked your father away when he tried to stop her. Last night was just the final chapter of a thirty-year hostile takeover."

Julian stared at his uncle, the realization washing over him like freezing water. He looked over at Maya, who had finished securing her hair into the neat low bun. She stood up slowly from the vanity mirror, walking toward the bed wearing a brand-new, impeccably tailored black silk evening gown—a stark, elegant contrast to the beige satin slip dress she had worn through the horrific ordeal of the night before.

"Maya," Julian whispered, reaching out a trembling hand to take hers. "Where did you get that dress? What are we going to do? The gala is tonight. If my mother’s associates realize she’s arrested, they’ll vote to strip our remaining shares by noon."

Maya placed her hand gently over his, her skin cool and steady. Her dark eyes burned with a terrifying, absolute resolve.

"They won't have the chance to vote, Julian," Maya said, her voice dropping into a calm, chilling register. "Because tonight, at the annual Vance Foundation Charity Gala, the entire high-society elite is going to watch their entire empire burn to the ground."

Julian swallowed hard, feeling a cold shiver run down his spine. He pulled himself up to a sitting position, ignoring the blinding pain in his head.

"How?" Julian asked. "Marcus Sterling locked down the corporate mainframes, and the board controls ninety percent of the voting stock."

Silas stepped forward, holding out a sleek, encrypted flash drive and dropping it gently onto the bed beside Julian’s hand.

"Marcus locked the mainframes, yes," Silas said with a grim smile. "But he forgot about the offline backup server housed deep in the sub-basement of the gala venue—the very server your grandfather built with me back in 1994."

Julian stared at the flash drive, then looked up at his wife. The terrified, exhausted woman washing dishes in a messy kitchen sink was gone. In her place stood the true master of the Vance dynasty.

"Let's go ruin a party," Julian said, swinging his legs over the edge of the bed.
