Chapter 5 - Darkness in the Ballroom

The sudden blackout plunged the opulent hall into terrifying darkness, broken only by the frantic glow of dozens of smartphone screens held aloft by panicked guests. Shouts of confusion echoed off the marble walls as people began pushing toward the exits. Eleanor immediately dropped to her knees, extending her hands blindly across the floor.
"Lily! Lily, stay right where you are! Grab my hand!" Eleanor called out, her voice straining over the rising chaos of the crowd.
"I'm here, Aunt Eleanor," a small voice whimpered from somewhere near the heavy water bucket.
Eleanor lunged forward, her fingers brushing against the soft cotton of the white dress. She grabbed Lily securely, pulling the child tightly against her chest to shield her from the rushing bodies of the fleeing guests.
Across the room, the sound of heavy footsteps running toward the private corridor rang out over the din. It was Beatrice, using the cover of darkness to make a desperate escape toward the secret vault.
"She's getting away!" Arthur's voice shouted from the darkness, sounding panicked and betrayed. "She's heading for the backup stairs!"
Detective Vance's flashlight suddenly clicked on, cutting a brilliant white beam through the smoky haze of the ballroom. The bright beam swept across the room, illuminating overturned chairs, spilled red wine, and the frantic faces of the remaining guests. The beam locked onto the far doorway, where the heavy velvet curtains were still swaying.
"Stay here with the officers," Detective Vance ordered Eleanor, breaking into a fast sprint toward the private corridor.
Eleanor held Lily tight, her heart pounding against her ribs as she watched the detective disappear into the shadows. The emergency generator kicked on a few seconds later, bathing the ruined ballroom in a harsh, flickering red light from the fire exit signs.
Arthur stumbled over toward Eleanor and Lily, his face pale and slick with nervous sweat. He dropped to his knees, looking pleadingly at the little girl.
"Lily, listen to me very carefully," Arthur whispered urgently, leaning in close. "Your mother didn't just hide the microchip in your dress. She left something else behind before the fire. Something hidden inside the grandfather clock in the study."
Eleanor glared at the lawyer, distrust etched into every line of her face. "Back away from her, Arthur. You've done enough damage for one lifetime."
May you like
"I'm trying to save her!" Arthur snapped, his eyes wide with genuine terror. "Because Beatrice isn't running away to escape the police. She's running to get the gun she keeps in the study desk."
