Chapter 13 - The Acid-Etched Key

The faint smell of sulfur hung heavily in the air as Detective Vance stood up from pinning the masked gunman to the asphalt, snapping handcuffs onto the assailant's wrists. He walked back to the open doors of the ambulance, breathing heavily, and looked inside at Eleanor and Lily.
"Are you both alright?" Detective Vance asked, wiping soot from his forehead.
"We're physically fine, but look at this," Eleanor said, holding out the brass key for the detective to see. "The serial numbers have been etched off with acid. It's completely blank."
Detective Vance took the key, examining it closely under his flashlight beam. A frown deepened the lines on his face. "This wasn't done just now. It was done years ago. Whoever hid this key knew that if it was ever found, the numbers couldn't be traced to a specific bank branch."
"Then how are we supposed to open the safety deposit box?" Eleanor asked, frustration bleeding into her voice. "If we don't know the branch, the key is just a useless piece of metal."
"It's not useless," a weak voice rasped from the stretcher behind them.
Eleanor and Detective Vance spun around to see Beatrice conscious again, her eyes open and lucid despite the oxygen mask and the heavy painkillers pumping through her IV. She weakly motioned for Eleanor to come closer.
Eleanor leaned down, pressing her ear close to the older woman's lips. "Beatrice? Can you hear me?"
"The numbers... aren't missing," Beatrice whispered painfully, struggling for air. "They were written in invisible ink... using a chemical compound that only reacts... to ultraviolet light."
Detective Vance immediately reached into his tactical vest, pulling out a small UV forensic flashlight. He clicked it on, bathing the blank brass key in a pool of sharp ultraviolet light.
Slowly, glowing blue numbers materialized on the flat surface of the key: Branch 409, Vault 12-B.
"Branch 409," Detective Vance read aloud. "That's the Federal Reserve underground facility downtown. The most secure vault in the entire state."
Beatrice let out a faint, exhausted sigh, her eyes drifting closed once more as the heart monitor steadied. "Hurry... before Miller's associates realize... the key is still active."
As the ambulance doors slammed shut and the vehicle resumed its high-speed race to the hospital, Detective Vance's radio suddenly crackled to life with an emergency broadcast from dispatch.
