Chapter 11 - The Ambulance Ride

The wail of the ambulance siren cut through the rainy night air as the vehicle sped away from the grand estate, its red and blue lights flashing against the wet pavement. Inside the back of the cramped vehicle, the rhythmic beep of the heart monitor provided a tense soundtrack to the journey. Eleanor sat on the narrow bench seat, holding little Lily tightly in her lap, while two paramedics worked frantically over Beatrice, who lay unconscious on the stretcher with an oxygen mask strapped to her face.
"Her vitals are stabilizing, but she lost a lot of blood," the lead paramedic announced, shining a small penlight into Beatrice's sluggishly reacting eyes. "We need to prep her for emergency surgery the moment we hit the hospital doors."
Eleanor nodded mutely, her hand gently stroking Lily's back to keep the child calm. The terrifying events of the evening had left deep emotional scars on the little girl, who hadn't spoken a single word since they left the study. Her stained white dress had finally been covered by a warm wool blanket, but the dark red wine stain remained a haunting reminder of where the nightmare had begun.
Detective Vance's unmarked police cruiser followed closely behind the ambulance, its headlights carving a path through the dark, winding roads.
Eleanor reached into the pocket of her own evening gown and pulled out the small brass key she had retrieved from the lining of Beatrice's green dress just before the paramedics arrived. The key was cold and heavy, engraved with a set of numbers that matched the serial code of a private vault at the First National Bank downtown.
"What's that, Aunt Eleanor?" Lily asked quietly, her soft voice breaking the long silence in the back of the ambulance.
"It's a key, sweetie," Eleanor replied gently, offering a reassuring smile. "It's going to help us finally bring your parents home, and make sure nobody can ever hurt this family again."
Lily looked down at the key, her small fingers reaching out to touch the cold metal. "Mommy said that key opens the door to our real house. The one we had to leave behind."
Eleanor's heart ached at the child's words. She pulled Lily closer, feeling a fierce determination settle deep within her bones. Whatever secrets the First National Bank vault held, she was ready to face them, no matter who tried to stop her.
The ambulance suddenly jerked to a violent halt, throwing the paramedics off balance as the vehicle skidded across the wet asphalt.

The back doors of the ambulance swung open abruptly, revealing a masked man holding a submachine gun in the blinding glare of a police roadblock.
