Chapter 4 - The Hidden Seam

Detective Vance knelt down beside little Lily, his expression softening to put the terrified child at ease. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a pair of specialized forensic tweezers, moving with deliberate caution so as not to frighten her further.
"You're very brave, Lily," Detective Vance said quietly, his voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom. "Can you show me the hem of your dress where the fabric feels a little heavier than the rest?"
Lily looked up at Eleanor for approval, and when Eleanor gently nodded, the little girl pointed a small finger toward the bottom right corner of the stained white dress. There, a heavy, reinforced seam was stitched with thick, metallic silver thread that contrasted sharply with the delicate cotton fabric.
"That's it," Eleanor murmured, realization dawning in her eyes. "The microfilm. That's what her mother was trying to protect before the house burned down."
Beatrice let out a sharp cry of protest, lunging forward with unexpected speed. "Stop them! That child is destroying family property!"
Before Beatrice could take another step, one of the uniformed officers gently but firmly intercepted her, blocking her path with a calm, professional demeanor. Detective Vance used the tweezers to snip the first thread of the reinforced hem, carefully pulling back the fabric to reveal a small, waterproof microchip sealed securely inside a clear plastic sleeve.
The flashbulbs of the guests' phones went off in a frantic flurry, capturing the exact moment the hidden evidence was brought to light. Arthur closed his eyes in defeat, leaning heavily against a marble pillar, while Beatrice stared at the microchip with pure, unadulterated hatred in her eyes.
"This chip contains the original deeds to the estate, signed over to Lily's mother before the tragic fire," Detective Vance announced, holding the tiny device up to the light of the chandelier. "It also contains the financial records proving systematic embezzlement by the estate's trustees over the past decade."
Eleanor looked down at Lily, feeling a profound sense of sorrow and vindication wash over her. "You protected it all this time, didn't you, sweet girl? You wore it to keep it safe."
Lily nodded slowly, a single tear rolling down her cheek as she whispered, "Mommy told me never to take the dress off, no matter how dirty it got."

Before Detective Vance could secure the microchip in an evidence bag, the main power grid of the mansion abruptly failed, plunging the grand ballroom into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
