Chapter 14 - The Federal Reserve Threat

The heavy steel doors of the Federal Reserve underground facility loomed menacingly under the harsh fluorescent lights as Detective Vance's unmarked cruiser screeched to a halt at the security checkpoint. Eleanor clutched Lily's hand tightly as they stepped out of the car, the cool subterranean air sending a shiver through them both. Armed federal guards stood with their weapons drawn, their faces tense as they surrounded the perimeter.

"Clear the area! We have an active bomb threat!" the head guard shouted, waving his hand frantically for them to back away.

"I have authorization from Judge Harrison and the federal prosecutor!" Detective Vance yelled, flashing his badge and holding up the acid-etched brass key that now glowed faintly under ultraviolet light. "We have the key to Vault 12-B. The evidence inside will stop this entire conspiracy!"

The head guard hesitated, looking at the badge, then down at little Lily standing bravely in her stained white dress. He pressed his radio to his ear, listening intently to frantic chatter coming from the command center inside.

"Negative, Vance. The bomb squad just confirmed a timed explosive device attached to the master grid of Vault 12-B. It's set to detonate in less than ten minutes," the guard said grimly. "Nobody goes down there."

"If we don't go down there, the evidence burns, and the people who killed Lily's parents win," Eleanor argued fiercely, stepping forward. "Let us in. I'll open the vault myself."

Detective Vance looked at Eleanor with deep concern. "Eleanor, it's suicide. If the bomb goes off—"

"I didn't come this far to turn back now," Eleanor interrupted, her voice unwavering. She looked down at Lily, who offered a small, courageous nod. "We finish this together."

The guard stared at them for a long, agonizing moment before finally lowering his weapon and stepping aside to punch the code into the heavy hydraulic security door. "You have exactly eight minutes. Not a second more."

The heavy steel door swung inward with a loud hydraulic hiss, revealing a long, dimly lit concrete corridor leading down to the underground vaults. Eleanor and Detective Vance rushed down the corridor, their footsteps echoing loudly off the concrete walls.

As they reached Vault 12-B, they stopped dead in their tracks. Strapped to the heavy brass door of the vault was a sophisticated digital explosive device, its red LED numbers ticking down rapidly: 03:45... 03:44...

And sitting right beside the glowing bomb, tied to a chair with heavy zip ties, was Arthur—unconscious, gagged, and wearing a dead man's switch wired directly to the vault handle.
