Chapter 8 - Destination Unknown

The rain began to beat a frantic, rhythmic tattoo against the roof of the speeding SUV as Julian navigated the winding mountain road leading toward the abandoned municipal airfield. The city lights had long since faded behind them, replaced by the dense, impenetrable darkness of the pine forest pressing against the shoulders of the highway. In the backseat, Claire sat motionless, her mind racing to reconstruct the shattered pieces of the puzzle. Julian’s frantic driving and vague explanations only deepened her suspicion that she was being led straight into another trap orchestrated by Marcus and his mysterious syndicate.
“You’re taking the old service road instead of the main highway. Why?” Claire asked quietly, her voice cutting through the hum of the engine.
“The main highway is crawling with federal patrols tracking my vehicle’s transponder. I had to rip the tracking chip out of the dashboard just to get us this far,” Julian replied, glancing nervously at the rearview mirror to check for headlights behind them.
“You knew how to disable a federal tracking transponder on a rental car? That isn't the kind of skill an ordinary corporate executive picks up at a weekend seminar, Julian,” Claire countered sharply, leaning forward until her face was inches from the gap between the front seats.
“When you work with men like Marcus Sterling for a decade, you learn survival skills you never wanted to know,” Julian sighed heavily, gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned chalk white.
The SUV crested a steep hill, and the rusted chain-link gates of the old airfield came into view through the sheets of rain. A solitary hangar stood at the far end of the tarmac, its metal roof gleaming under the dull glow of a single security light. Parked beside the hangar was a sleek, unmarked private jet with its turbines already whining softly in the damp night air.
“We aren't running away to save ourselves, are we, Julian? Marcus is waiting for us inside that hangar,” Claire stated flatly, her hand sliding into her blazer pocket to grip the heavy metal fountain pen her father had left her.
“Marcus is the only one who holds the master decryption key to prove neither of us stole the trust funds,” Julian admitted quietly, killing the engine as the SUV coasted to a halt beside the private aircraft.
“You’ve been working with him all along, haven't you? The fake engagement, the offshore accounts, the raid on the ballroom—it was all a staged theater to force me out of the company,” Claire said, her voice devoid of emotion as the horrifying truth finally locked into place.
Julian turned around in his seat, his eyes filled with a pathetic mixture of guilt and desperation. “It was the only way to keep you alive, Claire. Marcus wanted the entire board eliminated. Giving him the assets was the ransom price for your life.”

Before Julian could say another word, the passenger-side door was violently yanked open by a pair of heavily armed men in unmarked tactical gear, dragging him out onto the wet tarmac before he could unlatch his seatbelt.
