Chapter 1 - The Ring That Broke the Foundation

“Claire, no, please. This is a massive mistake. You cannot just lock everything down without listening to a single word I have to say!” Julian shouted, his voice cracking with sheer panic as he lunged forward.
“Listen to you? Julian, I have spent the last three years listening to your carefully crafted fabrications while you systematically bled our life’s work dry,” Claire replied, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper that cut through the glittering ballroom air like a razor.
“You think a fake engagement party with your corporate mistress is enough to distract me from the federal indictments already landing on your desk?” Claire continued, stepping closer while keeping her posture rigid and unyielding.
“How did you even find out about the offshore accounts? That database was encrypted by the best cybersecurity firm money could buy!” Julian stammered, his face draining of all color as he realized his elaborate deception had completely crumbled in a matter of seconds.
“Nothing stays hidden forever when you leave a paper trail as wide as a highway, Julian. Especially when the accountant you threatened last week decided to hand me the master keys,” Claire said, turning her gaze toward the panicked woman in the red dress who was now shrinking back into the terrified crowd.
“Elena had nothing to do with this! I swear to you, she is just an employee caught in the crossfire of our complicated arrangement,” Julian pleaded, desperate to salvage whatever dignity he had left as whispers erupted among the influential guests.
“An employee who was wearing my grandmother’s heirloom ring while posing as your future wife? Do not insult my intelligence any further tonight, Julian,” Claire snapped back, her eyes flashing with a cold, righteous fury that left no room for negotiation or mercy.
“If you freeze the joint assets right now, the entire holding company goes bankrupt by morning and every single investor will tear us apart,” Julian warned, grabbing her arm with a desperate grip that he instantly regretted.

“Then I suggest you start running, because the authorities are already in the lobby,” Claire whispered, pulling her arm away as flashing red and blue lights suddenly painted the grand floor.
