Chapter 10 - The Uninvited Audit

The thick steel doors of the hangar slammed against the concrete walls with a thunderous echo that momentarily drowned out the whining jet turbines. Through the billowing clouds of mist and rain, a tall figure stepped into the harsh halogen light, flanked not by corporate mercenaries, but by four uniformed federal marshals with their weapons drawn and ready.
“Nobody moves an inch! Federal custody, drop all weapons immediately!” shouted the lead marshal, his voice authoritative and absolute as laser sights painted the chests of Marcus’s private guards.
Marcus froze, his hand hovering inches above the transfer documents on the steel table, while Elena’s face drained of color as she instinctively reached for her smartphone to trigger a remote wipe.
“Agent Miller? How did you find this location? The transponders were disabled!” Marcus demanded, his composure cracking for the first time as he stood up from his chair.
“You forgot one crucial detail, Marcus: corporate satellite networks don't run on local cell towers; they route through federal communication backbones,” Agent Miller replied, stepping forward and clicking a pair of heavy steel handcuffs directly onto Marcus’s wrists before he could protest further.
Claire stood motionless by the table, staring at the sudden reversal of fortune. She looked down at the unsigned transfer papers, then across at Julian, who was still kneeling on the oil-stained concrete, gasping for air with a mixture of shock and profound relief on his face.
“Ms. Vance, I suggest you step away from the table. We have a federal warrant to seize all documents associated with the Sterling Trust,” Agent Miller instructed politely, nodding toward Claire as two marshals escorted a struggling Elena toward the waiting patrol vans outside.
“The trust belongs to my family. Those papers are fraudulent, fabricated by Marcus and his associates to steal the company holdings,” Claire stated firmly, refusing to yield an inch of ground to the federal investigators.
“We are well aware of the fraud, ma'am. Your late father left a secondary deposition with our department three weeks before his passing, detailing every single shell corporation Marcus operated,” Agent Miller explained, handing Claire a secure digital drive.
Claire took the drive, her fingers trembling slightly as the full weight of her father’s foresight finally washed over her. He had known about Marcus’s betrayal all along and had set a trap that took years to spring.
“What about Julian?” Claire asked quietly, glancing down at her husband, who was slowly being helped to his feet by one of the marshals.
“Mr. Vance is still under federal subpoena for corporate conspiracy and insider trading, pending a full review of his personal bank accounts,” the agent replied without hesitation.

As Julian was led toward the exit under guard, he stopped for a fraction of a second, locking eyes with Claire across the hangar floor, mouthing words she couldn't quite decipher over the roar of the departing jet.
