Chapter 5 - The Price of a Legacy

The sudden darkness swallowed the parking garage whole, robbing Claire of her sight and leaving her dependent entirely on the sounds echoing around the concrete cavern. She heard the soft, deliberate scuff of leather shoes moving toward her through the dark, followed by the faint mechanical whir of a heavy vehicle engine starting up nearby.

“Marcus, turn the lights back on right now! This childish game has gone far enough,” Claire called out, trying to mask the rising panic in her voice as she felt along the cold metal hood of her car for the dropped photograph.

“It’s not a game, Claire. It’s an audit of your survival skills,” Marcus’s voice reverberated from somewhere directly behind her left shoulder, much closer than she anticipated.

Her fingers brushed against the smooth paper of the photograph just as a pair of strong hands gripped her shoulders from behind, holding her firmly in place. She didn’t scream—years of high-stakes corporate negotiations had taught her to suppress raw panic in favor of calculated defense. Instead, she drove her heel backward as hard as she could, connecting solidly with a shin.

A sharp intake of breath confirmed the blow landed, and the grip on her shoulders loosened instantly. Claire didn’t hesitate; she sprinted blindly toward the faint amber glow of the emergency exit sign at the far end of the garage, her designer heels snapping off under the sudden strain. She threw her weight against the heavy steel door, tumbling out into the cool midnight air of the city alleyway just as the garage lights flickered back on overhead.

Leaning against the brick wall of the alley, she gasped for breath, her chest heaving as she clutched the recovered photograph in her sweaty palm. The streetlamps cast a dim yellow glow over the image, revealing not just financial figures, but a grainy surveillance photo of her father meeting secretly with Marcus—and a third, unidentifiable person wearing a distinctive corporate signet ring.

She pulled out her smartphone to call the federal agents handling Julian’s case, but the screen flashed a single warning before going entirely black: Network connection disabled by administrator.

Footsteps echoed softly from the mouth of the alleyway. Claire pressed herself flat against the rough brick wall, holding her breath as a tall silhouette stepped out from the shadows, holding her beige folder in one hand and her stolen car keys in the other.

“You really should learn to check the backseat before getting into your car, Ms. Vance,” a cold, synthesized voice spoke from the darkness, stepping directly into the amber streetlight to reveal Elena—the woman in the red dress—smirking behind a completely different, unblemished face.
