Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Ledger

The glowing smartphone screen illuminated Claire’s face in the dim corridor just outside the ballroom doors. The message read simply: He didn’t steal it. Her breath caught in her throat as she stared at the unfamiliar routing number linked directly to her personal trust fund. For three years, she had believed Julian was the sole architect of the financial ruin currently unfolding inside the ballroom. Now, standing alone in the quiet hallway while federal agents hauled her husband away, the foundation of her entire reality began to shift once again.
“Excuse me, Ms. Vance? We need your signature on the asset seizure authorization before we transport the suspect,” a voice interrupted, snapping Claire back to the grim present reality.
She turned to see a junior agent holding a digital tablet, his pen poised impatiently. Claire forced her hand steady, swiping the screen to sign her name, though her mind was entirely consumed by the mysterious text message pulsing on her own device. Who else had access to the master ledger? Who knew about the offshore accounts before she even downloaded the files from the accountant’s laptop?
“Is there a problem with the asset transfer, ma'am?” the agent asked, noticing her sudden hesitation.
“No. Everything is in order. Proceed with the seizure,” Claire lied smoothly, handing the tablet back before hurrying toward the private elevator bank.
Once inside the metal compartment, she pressed the button for the underground parking garage, needing absolute isolation to process the new threat. The elevator descent felt agonizingly slow, a mechanical heartbeat measuring out her rapidly diminishing sense of control. When the doors finally slid open to the subterranean concrete level, the air was cool and smelled faintly of exhaust fumes and damp pavement. She walked briskly toward her vintage sedan, her heels clicking rhythmically against the floor, but stopped when she noticed the driver's side door was slightly ajar.
Her heart hammered against her ribs as she clutched her beige folder tighter to her chest, scanning the dim shadows between the parked luxury vehicles. A lone figure stepped out from behind a concrete pillar, holding a manila envelope identical to the one she had dropped on the ballroom table earlier that evening.
“You missed a few pages, Claire,” a distorted, synthesized voice echoed through the concrete cavern from a small speaker device the stranger held.

Before Claire could demand answers or scream for the garage security, the stranger tossed the envelope onto the hood of her car and vanished into the emergency stairwell just as a heavy metal door slammed shut.
