Chapter 6 - The Face Behind the Mask

The woman standing in the amber alleyway light was no longer the panicked, tearful mistress caught in the ballroom crossfire. Elena’s posture was rigid, her movements precise, and the terrified tremor in her voice had vanished completely, replaced by a chilling, corporate detachment.

“Who are you really?” Claire demanded, pushing herself off the brick wall and standing her ground despite her bare feet aching against the cold pavement.

“I am the person who is going to finish what your father started twenty years ago, before he grew a conscience and tried to hand the keys to an ungrateful daughter,” Elena replied smoothly, tossing Claire’s car keys into the air and catching them with practiced ease.

“My father built this company from the ground up through legitimate trade and sheer hard work. He wasn't a criminal like you and Marcus!” Claire shouted, her anger finally overriding her caution.

“Legitimate trade? Oh, Claire, sweet, sheltered Claire. Do you honestly think a global empire is built on honesty and polite handshakes?” Elena laughed softly, stepping closer while the distant wail of police sirens began to approach the end of the block.

“Julian was just a pawn we used to siphon the liquidity back into the mother company while you played philanthropist. But Julian got greedy, tried to embezzle from the slush fund, and forced our hand,” Elena explained, her tone as clinical as a surgeon delivering a diagnosis.

“And now Julian is sitting in a federal interrogation room taking the fall for all of us,” Claire said, realizing the terrifying depth of the conspiracy surrounding her family name.

“Julian is where he belongs. But you, Claire... you have the master signature authorization we need to unlock the Swiss holdings. Sign the transfer documents inside your folder, and walk away with enough millions to disappear quietly,” Elena offered, holding out the beige folder like a business proposition.

“And if I refuse?” Claire asked, her eyes narrowing as she mentally calculated the distance to the main street.

“Then you join your husband in federal custody for conspiracy, insider trading, and corporate fraud. The evidence package is already uploading to the SEC servers under your IP address,” Elena replied, tapping the side of her sleek smartphone with a manicured fingernail.

Claire looked down at the folder, her mind racing through a dozen desperate scenarios. As she reached out her hand to take the papers, a sleek black SUV screeched to a halt at the mouth of the alley, its high-beam headlights blinding them both. The passenger door flew open, and a familiar voice shouted from the glare.
