Chapter 9: The Trial of the Fallen
In January of the following year, the federal wire fraud and grant embezzlement trial against Richard and Kayla commenced at the federal district courthouse in New York.
Maya was called as the primary witness for the prosecution.
She took the stand wearing a simple dark navy suit, her demeanor calm and unshakeable. She did not raise her voice, and she did not deliver emotional speeches. She presented laboratory server logs, encrypted email archives, and bank transfer receipts that detailed eighteen months of systemic financial and academic manipulation.
Kayla sat at the defense table, wearing a borrowed, ill-fitting blazer, her hair unstyled, her eyes hollowed out by fear and isolation. Her high-society friends had abandoned her the moment the grand jury indictment was handed down; her venture capital partners had testified against her in exchange for immunity.
When the cross-examination began, the defense attorney attempted to paint Kayla as a naive young woman who had merely followed her father’s bad advice.
Maya looked directly at Kayla from the witness stand.
""Kayla knew the formulas in my notebook were not hers,"" Maya stated clearly under oath. ""She knew because when she submitted the draft, she copied a deliberate mathematical error I had planted in the third molecular equation—an error that could only have come from stealing the physical notebook from my locked desk.""
The courtroom fell dead silent.
The jury deliberated for less than three hours.
Richard was convicted on four counts of federal grant fraud and grand larceny, sentenced to seven years in a federal penitentiary. Kayla was convicted of conspiracy, sentenced to eighteen months of community labor at a regional rehabilitation center, and permanently stripped of all academic credentials.
