Chapter 12: The Next Generation

Five years after that fateful commencement ceremony, Maya stood at the podium of the very same university auditorium.
This time, she was not receiving a diploma. She was delivering the keynote address as the newly appointed Chair of the Department of Sustainable Biochemical Engineering—the youngest professor ever appointed to the position in the university’s two-hundred-year history.
The hall was packed to capacity with hundreds of eager young students holding notebooks and digital tablets.
Maya looked out at the sea of bright, hopeful faces.
""When you enter this laboratory,"" Maya said, her voice resonant and steady, ""you will be tempted to measure your progress by how quickly you can publish, how many grants you can win, or how much wealth your discoveries can generate.""
She paused, looking down at the front row where Daniel and a group of young international research fellows sat smiling.
""Resist that temptation,"" Maya continued. ""True intelligence is not the ability to outsmart your neighbor; it is the capacity to lift them up. Science without compassion is merely a sophisticated form of cruelty. Your task is not to conquer the world; it is to heal it.""

The auditorium erupted into thunderous applause, the sound echoing off the ancient stone walls like a chorus of hope.
